Can this be unlocked by entering a code?

Or is it cable/physical unlock only?

I've got one which is locked to t-mobile. Will t-mobile give me a code
to unlock if I ask them? (how much will they charge for this?)

In my (very limited) experience, it's not generally possible to unlock SE
phones by entering a code. You will probably need a cable and some software,
or possibly one of those unlocking gizmos that plug directly into the
    phone...

If you don't get any sensible answers here, and you can't get a definite
answer from Google (or whatever), try taking the phone to your local mobile
    phone market stall.

Oh, T-Mobile will probably unlock it for you, depending on how long you've
had the phone, and how much you've spent on it, but it might well still be
cheaper to get it done by an independant trader...

Take it down the market! It'll probably cost about the same(though you might
be able to negociate a better price if you can play one stall off another),
but they should be able to do it within a few minutes...!

Like Alex says, a Virgin sim should work without unlocking.

I thought all phones these days were locked to a specific network?

Or is it because I'm going from t-mobile to virgin? Are they linked
    somehow?

    Hmmmmm.

Not in my country ... we don't accept that very well.
Very very rare over here (Italy), I believe onky h3g does this.
Even Vodafone will not lock their branded phones.
