Is it a dialing code (somthing like 01582 or 01234)?
If so, you have probably managed to turn on 'Cell-Info'(or something like
that) display, which will show information about the mobile cell(in the UK,
usually the dialing code) you are connected to.
I'm afraid I don't know how to turn it back off with that particular phone,
but at least this should give you a clue where to start looking in the
manual...

Not on O2. AFAIK only Vodafone support this in the UK.

Oh, fair enough. 'Twas a Vodafone phone that I found that feature on. That
explains why I haven't been able to get it to work on my current phone
(T-Mobile/Virgin).

O2 has this facility, but the info code is 200 (ISTR it is 050 on
Vodafone).

In the old days vodafone had a tariff that equalled a local call if
the STD number was displayed.

I stand corrected. Just tried it on an old Cellnet SIM I have lying
around.
