they lock their phones? She is currenly on Virgin Mobile but she doesn't
want to change number or network as she has been with then for over 10
years.

They are locked to O2 and Sony are notoriously difficult if not
impossible to unlock.
CPW usually have unlocked phones so they can put them on any network
(except Orange usually.)

Wasn't aware that Sony are any more difficult to unlock than any other
(except most Nokias which seem to be very easy)
Got my Sony (W610i) unlocked at the local market for ten quid.
Could have got it for less it turned out if I'd have shopped arround, but I
was in a hurry at the time...
Do a bit of research on the W380i(Google, ask your local independant phone
shop/market stall etc), and hopefully you'll find it can be unlocked for a
small fee.

A very quick look on Google would seem to suggest that the W380i can be
unlocked by remote codes. This means you just need to supply the IMEI number
of your phone and they will give you a code which will let you unlock the
phone.
Obvioulsy be a little bit careful who you give your IMEI number to, try and
find somewhere by recomendation, rather than randomly choosing an unlocking
website though.

For the same reason as it pays to take care who you give ANY personal
information to...
Anyway, isn't it possible to clone or block someones phone if you know the
IMEI??

Depends on the phone. Not so easy now as it was with earlier generations
of handsets. Not without expensive/specialist kit, anyway, which
effectively makes it not worth bothering with for the average street punk.

Agreed, but if you are emailing your IMEI code to some random 'Unlocking
Company' -say 'Phoneski Unlocking R Uski[We've nothing to do with the
Russian Mafia]', it could be a bit risky.
Anyway, I only made the comment initially as a bit of a "don't blame me if
anything goes wrong" type disclaimer...

No. When blacklisting IMEI numbers the network juts looks it up from
their records, they don't have to ask the customer what their IMEI is.

An IMEI is not personal information. It is transmitted to the network
when you make a call.

No. Well, anything is possible, but it would cost far too much to be
worth doing. And what use would a cloned IMEI be to anyone?
