    1. Offer a cheap range of phones that are simple to use _as a phone_, no
teenage gimmicks like multimedia. Include large buttons and easy SMS.
    2. Offer a minimal monthly charge + billing for calls on top. No need
    for included minutes.

That's it.... Call it 'The Sensible Network'

And with such a low income how do you propose to start this network? I
imagine you would need several billion pounds to build a mobile network,
not to mention hiring staff etc.

It could be done as a Virtual network like Virgin.

A non entity like Tiny PCs did it on Voda with TinyMobile,
not being able to offer much more than Voda PAYT, of course they only
    lasted a couple of years.

For any Virtual to exist demonstrates the Networks are charging so much,
it leaves room for a virtual to carve a niche and still make a profit.

Really? Do we have that choice? What contract offers us no inclusive
    minutes?

    PAYG..!

My Virgin SIM on DD is effectively a contract, but with no line rental or
inclusive minutes. Only charges are for calls made, think it was 69p last
    month.

My Virgin OVP on Orange gives me exactly one of those minute-less
contracts. It suits me just fine.

Virgin Direct Debit? Orange OVP Virgin? Both zero-pounds-per-month
'contracts'. There's no point paying a monthly fee if you get nothing in
return. If you want a handset on such 'contract' then buy one on your
credit card - just the same as paying monthly contract installments.

Neither will disconnect you if you don't use the phone for months. Both are
postpay with online billing (is that right for OVP?). Am I missing anything
else that contracts provide? Oh yes, a lockin period of 0 months.

No longer available new, but old ones can be transferred.
They turn up occasionally on eBay

if you are worried about the number having been used,
and being called by the previous owners callers.
Port in a new PAYT number from a free sim

I get paper bills from Orange for my VM OVP phones

Nothing much else as far as I can see. But a PAYG with autotopup is
probably as good. VM OVP is expensive for cross-net calls. Tesco Value
is cheaper if you make a lot of that sort of call.

That's the first time I've heard of Virgin PAYG + DD. Sounds like a
    good idea. Thanks!

    Full roaming, free voicemail.

Also between two (or more) Orange OVP Virgin phones
free voicemail deposits in each others voicemail.
(which Virgin stopped in 2000 as they made nothing out of it)

Motorola made a special back case for C520 to take AA cells,
only problem was the cost about 20quid, more than the phone is worth.

Mind you if you can find one, put it in the Antiques road show 2050
it would be so rare it would be priceless ;-)

and with dozens of contributors to the Orange list, just read the only
posting for July, it's someone leaving Orange for 3, would the last person
on the list please turn out the lights.

Also, I've got a couple of the original "3" 3ToGo contracts, never use them
mind, but every month I get a bill with "Nothing to Pay!" printed on it.
