No, the credit doesn't expire. If you don't make or receive any chargeable
calls (or texts etc.) for 6 months, Orange reserve the right to de-activate
your SIM and (possibly) re-alloate the phone number. You then have to ring
up to get it re-activated and, when you do so, the credit is re-instated.
Chances are that the phone will still have the same number, too.

To keep it active you must either make a chargeable call, send a
chargeable text message or activate a top-up once every 180 days.
If you don't do that then Orange can cut you off. If you still remain
dormant for a while after that then your number will be terminated and
re-cycled and your credit will be forfeit.

That's not quite what it says in the PAYG T&Cs. They don't mention two
stages. They say that, in the absense of a . . (qualifying event) . . within
a six month period, the phone will be disconnected and its number
re-allocated.
They say that when you re-connect you will be given a new number, and that
any remaining credit on your PAYG Voucher (presumably applying to top-ups
purchased by any means) will be re-instated.
That's the *official* version - but my experience is that they don't
necessarily re-allocate the number and that you're likely to get the same
one back - I always have!
