I'm looking for a new phone. I'd like the phone to be able to use my
wireless router to access the internet, so i can browse the internet on
my phone (using my residential broadband connection) without getting a
huge bill. Also if the phone could play mp3's that'd be cool

I'm going to buy it off ebay so as i can get it cheap.

    Which phones can do this?

Thanks in advance for responding with your advice.

The Nokia n95 was okay at it, but for seamless web browsing with a
proper browser then you're going to be looking at an old iPhone.

Or, if you wanted the whole MP3 thing and a decent web browser, but
without the phone then a simple 8Gb iPod Touch would do the same as
the iPhone in every way, but no phone.

The disadvantage of the iPhone is that it is governed by control
freaks Apple. They are already blocking apps. that they see as
threatening to either their own, or their partners, commercial
interests. With, for example, Symbian, there are lots of applications
and you can add any of them at will to your phone.
    Check out getjar.com for example.
From what I've seen I'd go for the N95 8GB. I guess you could add the
    Opera browser to it too.

He only wants a phone that he can browse the t'interweb on and play
music and isn't looking for Apps. The web browser, even Opera, on any
Symbian device I've used has always been wanting something like, erm,
a proper web browser like Safari, plus a decent interface.

I have to say, having owned the n95 and iPhone + 3G I'd still go for
the iPhone 3G any day, the free apps on it are also very good.

HTC Touch, great phone. Think iPhone without all the apple
    restrictions.

    Blackberry Pearl 8120.

Go for a BIS-connect unlimited data deal and you can use wireless and
GPRS/EDGE when out and about. No huge bills. The Opera Mini browser
comes close to what you see on a PC screen.

Or sod wireless and have GPS. That's the Pearl 8100.

These are real phones as well.

I just picked up a very good conditioned Nokia E61 for £60. I mostly got it
for the keyboard, but it has wifi and 3G, microSD slot (for storing mp3's)
and has the S60 3rd Edition software (same as whats in the N95) in it, so
all the great apps can be installed on it.

Install Opera Mini as suggested earlier and what about Nokia Internet Radio
Player, Truphone or Fring for internet calls, palringo for IM (MSN, Yahoo,
Gtalk, Jabber, Nokia Chat, AIM), etc..
