If I decided to get an iPhone 3G, which I'm currently giving serious
consideration. Would I be better to go to 02, Carphone Warehouse or an
Apple store? I know stocks are limited everywhere at the moment, I'm
more interested if there is any benefit to using any particular retailer...?

Buy one in France where they are not allowed to be locked, so you can
    use whichever SP you wish.

Well Apple store has the benefit of most likely actually having stock, plus
they are the only ones selling the white version of the 16GB model if that is
of interest to you. I believe they activate the handset in store with you.

CPW has a bit of a bad reputation for being rather forceful with trying to
sell insurance (and may well phone you up afterwards to try again) so I would
    be inclined to avoid them.

O2 store seemed fine when I upgraded from my 1st gen iPhone to the iPhone 3G
(which you can't do in Apple store) - I just had to sign a renewed contract
but the activation was left for me to do at home with iTunes (though that may
have only been because it was an upgrade).

So if you have an Apple store near you then I would use them, otherwise an O2
store - just phone first to make sure they have stock.

I wouldnt bother at all myself. Mate at work has one and everytime i see
him hes asking someone else in the canteen about how to set up his Hotmail
account (pop settings) and stuff along with being unable to use MSN etc.
There is some issue with "flash" not working cause the phone either wont
download it or run it which means he is unable to watch video clips etc.
Also unable to simply FWD text messages without a third party app - even I
was staggered at that - how basic is FWDin a text?

    Why bother?

    - iPhone doesn't run flash cos Appel won't allow it.

    - Hotmail : you can't use POP unless you pay a premium. Use gmail or
something. But whatever you do, DON'T use MobileMe. It's Apple's
    biggest flop EVAR.

it doesn't really fit in with their paradigm of text *conversation* in speech
bubbles between two people- if you want forwarding, attachments etc., you can
    always use email.

True, but there is a built-in YouTube app which does work well.

    .... and doesn't use flash.

I agree, both flash and java are going nowhere on this platform. Apple
won't make any money out of it!

Why then, do the iPhone SDK APIs use Java?

They don't. Perhaps you are confusing Java with JavaScript?
