I went through the automated droid-ess to register my SIM and give IMEI
etc. to setup an account, I was given an Orange number and I have
verified everything + got my 4 digit security code. I can login to my
account and my number is shown yet when I try to do anything I am told I
    have not registered.

"Top up by £30 to receive 'unlimited' texts"..

....and what are the top-up options in 'my account'? £5, £10, £25 and £50.

That's some smart programming there, Lou!

I spoke to a continental droid just now, he took all my details again
and gave me 99p credit for my troubles (woo hoo) - and that is not
    showing up either.

If I text ny number I get the messages so I am 'live' to that degree.

Have I fallen in to some nightmarish black-n-orange hole?

    Is there any escape?

You could leave it for a day to see what happens.

After 3 months I'm still waiting for Orange email registrations server to
work so i can re-register my ten year old Orange email address that
    FT Orange mistakenly cancelled

Yes, it's no accident that Orange have fallen from joint first,
to 5th and last place for customer numbers, in 5 years.

No amount of stupid slick advertising can hide that fact

Driven IMHO mostly by endless non working web/server services,
and increasingly useless CS that can't solve the problems

Yes, follow the crowd and move to another network that works,
    like Three

The future's bright, the future isn't FT Orange

    No no no!

Do the £5 topup first, then the £25. If you do the £25 first will will
regiister the first topup is between 20.00 and 29.99 and will only give 600
texts, do it the other way and you'll get unlimited.

And the £1 registration credit will be on there, it just shows as a
multibundle, not actual "cash" credit. Listen to the end of the message on
453 and it'll tell you that.

The registrations on the automated IVR get recorded and passed to an offline
CSR to update, but it won't show for a while.

    Hope that helps.

Cheers guys - but I still cannot top up online as it will not let me
register a credit card. The only way I have managed to do it is to buy a
    voucher and use that.

Today I have received an automated response acknowledging my email
asking them to sort things out - things must be pretty crap now at
Orange if an *automated* service takes 4 days to respond. Glad I am no
longer with them for my main services (I pulled 14 business phones from
them two years ago, but I wanted the 'unlimited' text bundle for this
    one new phone).

Hey get this from their email:

"Orange strive to supply customers with the highest level of service and
we would therefore like to advise that this is an automated response."

WTF is that supposed to mean?

    a) Our reps are now so crap that you're better off with this generic
response that doesn't actually answer your question?

    b) We're striving to provide the highest level of service but in this
    case we haven't

    c)?

All true I'm afraid. My wife stopped being unable to login to her
account online and was told by Orange IT (having been passed there by
Orange CS) "ah, we changed the password on your account"........but no
elaboration or reason as to why they'd felt the need to do so.

And they're the only network I've ever had problems with reversed-
    billing SMS.
