Just got a text today from 3Alerts:

"In 30 days time your 3 SIM won't work in this mobile. Pop into a 3Store
to discuss the best options for you to continue to use the 3 PAYG service."

WTF? Anyone know what's going on?

The "mobile" in question is a Huawei E160 HSDPA modem.

If it has a IMEI 3 doesn't recognise as 3G, then they may think you have
contravened your contract with them, and want to disconnect you?

Get in touch with 3 CS

Get a T-Mobile sim instead and tell Three to go stuff themselves?
You'll still get access to the same combined T-Mobile/Three networks(s)
for 3G, in addition you'll get GPRS fallback on T-Mobile's GSM network
    if out of 3G coverage.

I'd rather fall back on Orange if out of 3G coverage with 3

    Gotcha. I recently switched from a "Three" branded E220 to a non-branded
    E160.

    Thanks

Good to know. I'll look into it if I can't get it resolved with Three.

    Thanks for the tip Andy.

AIUI they only allow falling back to Orange for GSM voice calls, not for
    GPRS data calls.

The T-Mob/H3G combined operation is still very much in its infancy and
AFAIK only really active in some areas inside the M25. It will in due
course roll out across the UK but don't hold your breath.

True, as I found recently. A call to 3 confirmed that data is 3G
only, with no fall-back to 2.5G and again this is confirmed by 3's
    coverage maps.

But is it a 3G phone?

I'd like to know if it's just the fact that it's not their phone that they
object to or if it's that it's not a 3G phone in which case they quite
reasonably don't like having to pay for you use Orange's 2G network all the
    time.

    It's a 3G + HSDPA USB Modem. I can't use Orange's GPRS, but I can use
    Orange's EDGE.

Yes but is it's IMEI on 3s list of 3G phones/3G Modems?
If not, their system may think it's an unauthorised 2g device?

Call 3 CS and have them escalate the problem up to someone technical
