So, I'd had my new E66 for six weeks, pristine condition, screen protector.
I put it in the leather case as usual, stuck it in my trouser pocket as
usual (nothing else in there), went to the pub and didn't look at it until I
got home. Took it out at home and the screen is unreadable because of a
lovely big star-shaped crack in the LCD. The outer glass is fine, it's the
    inner screen which is cracked.

Obviously it's not a warranty repair so I'm getting a Nokia Service Centre
to replace the screen (£45), but I just wondered if anyone had any idea how
this could have happened - I'm mystified!

I've had many baffling experiences when I have been to the pub, but they are
usually about where that extra £40 that I took with me 'just in case'
    disappeared to ;-)

Ordinarily I would agree completely, but this time I was the designated
    driver!

Is the outer "glass" really glass, or some form of plastic?

Sounds like you've bumped into the corner of e.g a table, the outer
"glass" had enough flex to bend rather than break, but it deflected onto
the inner glass (which will actually be glass) which broke.

    Could have been, I suppose.

Quite simply the phone has been squeezed or subjected to an impact
    whilst in your pocket.
