Hi,
Is it possible for me to port my T-mobile number to a new iphone PAYG,
but keep the T-mobile contract alive (it has 12m left)? I want to buy
an iphone PAYG, and I really don't want to have to close the T-mobile
account just to keep my number when I could give it to my gf.
Thanks,
John

AFAIK, no - the very act of porting closes the original account.

No it's not. Porting out will end the contrat.

How annoying! I guess there's nothing in it for them.

As previously pointed out prting will close the contract anyway. Whether you close or port/close the T-mobile contract you'll have to pay off the remaining 12 months.
I don't know whether T-mobile would allow you to get a PAYG SIM and swap the numbers over. Then you could port your number, which would be on PAYG leaving the contract in place.

Re: Port number out but keep contract
Unfortunately not.
Your earlyterm for the pac code would be 12 x *current plan charge*
This would then cancel your account.
