Hi,
Recently switched my phone to ASDA. Last night someone sent me a MMS message
for the first time since I've switched. (Their phone is on Virgin Mobile).
I received the message, but it only seems to be some sort of stub. When I
try to open it says 'Downloading Message' for a few seconds, then 'Download
Failed, Message Expired on the server'
According to the properties of the 'stub' message, it says
'Received: 24-11-2008 22:44'
'Expires: 27-11-2008 22:44'
So not expired according to that...
Anyone got any thoughts, is the problem likely to be with Virgin, ASDA, or
maybe something to do with the settings on my or my wife's(the sender)
phone...?
(my phone is a SE W610i, hers is a Motorla Pebl)

Can't remember now, I started out on ASDA's website, but I think I might
have finished up having the settings sent from SonyEricsson's one...
I'll try wap/wap and see what happens...
Thanks.

Yea, and on the sender's phone... that was one of the first things I
checked.
Good question though :-)

It's a server side problem and one that I've encountered when sent MMS for
an Asda mobile via T-Mobile (funnily enough with a SE phone but not a Nokia
one). It's not something you can fix your side - I've tried and failed with
many calls to CS and confirmation that my set up is okay.

Gareth,
Hmm, interesting. VirginMobile uses T-Mobile's network I think...
So what IS the solution? Give up? Get them to send it again?
Does it only happen occasionally, or consistantly with certain sending
networks?
Do you know who's 'fault' it is? Virgin/TMobile or ASDA/Vodafone?
Any more info that you have would be most useful.
Thanks.

There doesn't seem to be a solution (but see below) - if you receive the MMS
as a URL then the "Message expired" result is unavoidable; if it occurs once
then it will happen again (assuming the message has not actually expired of
course). Getting the person to send the message again is *not* a solution.
It still doesn't work.
I don't have the SE phone with me at present so I can't look at the link in
the message - as to who is at fault it depends which server the message is
on: the Virgin or Asda server.
Still, the message should be delivered to you as an actual MMS and not as a
mere link to the MMS content. This is the real question I suppose when
deciding who is at fault. Why is the message not delivered as a MMS?
I've only encountered this problem with T-Mobile to Asda and not other
networks (I've tested it with Orange, Voda, 3 and O2 and they all work
fine).
I have a sneaky suspicion that the problem is connected with a porting
problem and port settings that have not been correctly set. In my case the
culprit number (my number) was ported from T-Mobile to Virgin (some years
ago) and then from Virgin to Asda recently. I encountered major roaming
problems with the Virgin SIM (it wasn't recognised as a Virgin SIM when
roaming in *some* countries but rather as a T-Mobile SIM which could not
then register itself to T-Mobile). I think there's a similar problem
occurring here but I just don't have the endurance to get it sorted.
I gave up.

Hmm, just to clarify - having just tested I actually do get a similar error
when using a Nokia phone (a connection failure once the connection has been
established). At least this just also strongly suggest that the problem is
not specific to SE and is some sort of network problem.
