Do you want a local phone number in the Gambia, or do you expect
most of your inbound calls to be from the UK?
If you want a local phone number in the Gambia you probably will
need to wait until you get there and buy service locally. I
think the two local operators are these:
http://www.africell.gm
http://www.gamcel.gm
If you'd like a UK inbound number, however, you might look at
buying service from one of these companies:
http://www.maxroam.com
http://www.celtrek.com
Either company will provide a SIM with a UK landline number for
incoming calls, and their call charges are relatively cheap compared
to roaming with a regular UK SIM.

Then try the Maxroam SIM, maybe. SMS to the UK is a bit more expensive
than the local services but the outgoing International voice calls are half
the price of the local phones (or even less if some of your contacts
will call you instead).
I've not used Maxroam, by the way (I have Celtrek SIM), but people I
know who have think well of them. It is a dial-back service, though,
so make sure you understand how to dial a call before you leave.

Re: Gambia
Of all the International sims I have usesd (Maxroam, yackieMobile,
United Mobile+) Maxroam has the best call quality. And the cost is not
bad at all. I have used in in several countries in the Caribbean and
Europe. And In Nigeria too without any problems at all.

Buy a local sim while you are there, also you would find that Blacklisted
dualband phones that you might come across here, will still work there
As they don't use the Dublin blacklist database.
So don't buy used phones there and expect them to work back here,
as the used phone market in Africa is flooded with stolen European phones
