Go forbid I would have to "Roam for Orange" or some such just to get a
    decent GPRS negotiation...

I read that "3" were getting in to bed with T-Mobile?
    Maybe even possibly merging???

(Anyhow my working assumption, based on your IMSMC, is that "3"'s
current GPRS only service (On "Lemon" cells) is Orange

    :-)

3 are already in bed with T-Mob under the banner of MBNL. They share
resources - if 3 have a site where T-mob want to go then they just shove
in another transmitter and split the data at the switch - or vice versa.

Google MBNL if you want to know more.

Seems that the problem is more with "3" than orange per se...

    Here's some numbers...

Test with Nokia N70, Bluetooth connection from laptop

    Three PAYG
Phone has 100% signal in 3G mode. PPP returns:

Note that most of these packets are taking many seconds roundtrip (12
    seconds in the worst case)

At this point the connection suddenly burst into life and started returning
300ms pings. A little while later, it siezes up again and the packet loss
    stats start climbing:

    and I gave up.

I dragged out my Orange SIM and tried that. Same phone, same PPP settings,
    phone set to GSM only:

    local IP address 10.37.118.226
    remote IP address 10.6.6.6

I saw just the same spurty behaviour, which is why the packet loss is quite
low here (just after a spurt - it had risen quite a bit for some dozens of
packets). I didn't test it for too long as I was paying Orange's nasty
    per-kilobyte data cost.

If you look at the average and worst pings, it looks like Orange GPRS is
quite poor, but Three is worse.

    Thanks Theo,

    The consensus...

    http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum...d=1#post405567

...seems to be that GPRS data access works correctly on some "3"
packages (e.g. X-Series Silver) but not on others (e.g. Internet Max).
I have just changed my package so will be doing some testing soon...
