In looking for a new phone, I thought that there was just plain 'ol WM5... but now i'm starting to see people say "WM5, Smartphone" and "WM5, PPC"

Is there really a difference? Are there different "types" of the WM5 platform?

i.e. it appears that the usability of a cingular 3125 differs GREATLY from that of the "treo"-esque devices...

big difference. smartphones dont offer the full browsing capability that windows mobile pda's do. and easy way to tell the difference is the QWERTY keyboard. Its windows smartphone if it has no full keyboard. Mobile 5.0 if it has the full keyboard.

Go with a PPC not a smartphone, things are harder to do.

Also, the ppc's will generally have a bigger screen, and be more useful than a smart phone. The bigger screen allows you to view more at one time.

All else being equal, In my opinon, PocketPc is better....
As far as I can figure, PocketPC phones can do everything a Smartphone can and more.
The only concerns are... 1)Its much easier to find a small smartphone where as the smallest PocketPc phone is still bulky. 2) Many Smartphones are designed for one-handed operation and many Pocketpc phones are not
