    Technically, every time an ESN Swap is changed, there should be an ESN
    Swap Fee unless you fall in certain categories...

    * Business accounts, prepaid accounts
    * If you are swapping due to an ERP claim
    * If we swapped the phone under warranty
    * If you renew your 1 yr term at the same time you change

    Unfortunately from what I hear from customers and from other people on
    the NG, not all reps follow this procedure. If the rep wants to do
    their job correctly, that is the policy.

    What is an ESN? I have an 11 digit number behind my battery on a
    Samsung SPH-N300. I tried doing an activation and they told me to
    type ## 005 xxx where xxx are three more numbers (I don't know if
    they are supposed to be secret?) but it doesn't work, they told me to
    take the phone into a store. :-/

    An ESN is an Electronic Serial Number. For SPCS phones, that's a hard-code=
    d=20
    serial number programmed into the phone and unique to each one. That ## nu=
    mber=20
    you were given is a service code used to program the phone with phone numbe=
    r=20
    and MSID (internal number we've implemented as part of WLNP). It's called =
    a=20
    "Service Lock" code, of which there are two. A One-Time, and a "Master" co=
    de. =20
    Tough to say which one you were given, as they appear to be alike (although=
    =20
    I've never seen them be the exact same number). If it was the one-time cod=
    e=20
    that was used, then I can see why it failed, as it probably has already bee=
    n=20
    used.

    Good answer, as far as it goes....
    So was the CSR
    + LAZY
    + UNTRAINED
    + Over his average 6 minute limit?
    + failed to double check he got the ESN correct?

    That he failed to get the phone activated, or escalate it to someone who could
    and even to use the Master Code if the One Time code wouldn't work. Don't
    understand why they'd want to chase the user off the phone when they could
    easily solve the problem then and there, so typical of last rated SprintPCS
    Customer support.

    Since you forgot to cite the problem the rep appears to have seen, it's=20
    obvious you're not interested in a real answer.

    If the software in the phone is corrupted, then the Master code may not=20
    work, either. Thus, refer the customer to a store to have the phone=20
    reflashed. I didn't go into what the rep did or didn't do, because=20
    neither you nor I have enough information to know what actually=20
    happened.

    Unlike you, though, I don't automatically assume it's anyone's fault=20
    that a call was ended.

    Thanks guys. They spent about 45 minutes on the phone the first time,
    I called back and spent another 10 minutes with another rep trying again..

    I would put in the ## and six numbers and nothing would happen. They
    seemed to think something was wrong with the phone, but when I went
    into the store they didn't try to re-flash it. It's a Samsung SPH-N300,
    an older model, so maybe they can't do a re-flash.

    Then again, I don't know if they ever tried the master code, maybe they
    were just doing the one-time code.

    I'll take it in again and ask them about the master code and re-flashing
    the phone.

    Thanks again guys / Rob,

    True, but more likely the CSR got the ESN wrong and/or didnt even try the
    Master code. Seems to me that many CSRs dont even know what you're talking
    about when you say "I need an ESN swap", at least thats been my experience.

    Thanks everybody (except for all the boring folks, but you keep the group interesting,
    well that's one way to put it!)

    BTW, I went to another Sprint Express store who asked me to call customer
    service again, what a waste of time! I finally gathered (I think someone in here
    told me) I need to go to a "service center", and indeed they got it working by
    re-flashing or re-programming the phone.

    Thanks again,
    I would have sent the phone back to the eBay-er I bought it from several times
    if I have listened to the Sprint people who said it was broken :-/
