Wordpress is popular, and you can start a blog with Blogger, which offers free hosting. You can also use Google Sites to create a website, along with many other companies such as Wix. Some will allow you to put on advertisements which you can make money off of.

I think that in order to build your site should be determined on what platform s top work, such that s top WordPress or Joomla.

I think it really depends on your needs/why do you need a website....maybe before you spend money on hosting and purchase of domain you can test with hosts that have free website builders like 000webhost.com

How do those free web hosting providers make money? Are they supported by advertisements somehow?

Yes most of them use advertisements to make money, a few like 000webhost host your site for free with basic features being operational advanced features in the premium plan....they actually bank on the fact that once you test their service with basic features you will purchase the premium service........this reminds me of the time Hostable had the same promotion but unlocked all the features for a full year.......now they have more return clients than they can handle

I like the idea of different things being free, supported by advertisements. It would be nice if there were more services like it.

They enable me to test the service even learn more from it...personally i can see free services have enabled be do the following
Learn more on eCommerce using the free OS commerce software
Learn how to create simple websites using free templates
Learn how to play around with free forum software like PHPBB and MYBB and come up with a forum like this •

There are probably more benefits but these are the latest i can remember

First you have to decide on which niche you want to make your site and do some keyword research for that and check out the domain you want to buy is available or not. After that purchase hosting and setup CMS it can be wordpress or any other CMS.
