A friend sent me some ring tones that he recorded for his iphone in .m4r. Is there a way for me to convert them to mp3 to use on my Razer V3xx phone?

    Re: Convert m4r to mp3

media-convert.com does not convert m4r to mp3, only m4p, m4a, m4b, and everything else. I'm upset cause I'd have never paid for the ringtone if I knew I couldn't put it on my verizon blackberry storm.

    Re: Convert m4r to mp3

I just converted a .m4r file to mp3 on media-convert.com today. Maybe it works now. Good luck.

I just found this info at another site and it worked. I have a Mac but I think this info was for Windows.

Change .m4r files to .m4a and then go to preferences under the edit menu and then the advanced tab, then the importing tab. On the import using drop down box change it to "mp3 encoder", then under setting choose the bit rate you want, in your case good quality (128kbps). Then click ok.

Go to the song in the itunes libary and now when you right click you should see the option "Convert selection to mp3". Click it. The song will now be converted to a .mp3 file. Now nagivate to the folder where it is located and you will find the .mp3 file.

    I hope this helps.

You could always check out DVDVideo Soft. They convert video files from iPod, PSP, YouTube, etc. They even convert video to audio, and audio formats to your desired audio formats.

    Re: Convert m4r to mp3

I don't know how you did that on media-convert.com because they do not list it as in input format and will not allow "automatic detect." When you say "change m4r file to m4a file" what do you mean?? Change the extension manually?

OK; I tried this and it works. I think you'll need a full version of Quicktime.
Open the m4r file in Quicktime, which is capable of opening ringtones.
Export the file to a WAV file and save it.
Open in iTunes / Advanced / Create MP3 Version.
You don't have to do the last steps because you can use WAV files as ringtones in most phones, but it will make it a smaller (compressed) file. That's it.

    Re: Convert m4r to mp3

Step 1: Rename the file from m4r to m4a (yes, manually change the file extension).
Step 2: Download "Pazera Video Converter Suite" (it's free) and install it. You'll use it for lost of other things if you're a digital packrat like me. You'll have to Google the words in quotes, the forums won't let me post a helpful link in my first reply. I doubt I'll ever post 20 comments here.
Step 3: Run the Suite, choose Audio Extractor/Converter (the bottom right button).
Step 4: Set the output to MP3, click "Add Files" on the top menu bar, and choose the ringtone that started this whole mess.
Step 5: Click "CONVERT" on the menu bar. Yes, it's in ALL CAPS just like that.
Step 6: Wait until it's done.
Step 7: Go play with your new MP3 file.
Step 8: There is no Step 8.

    Re: Convert m4r to mp3

M4R is essentially a renamed AAC (M4A) file - it is similar to MP3 but compresses the digital audio files further. It is part of the MPEG-4 standard and is specified in the ISO/IEC standard 14496-3. It is a lossy algorithm much like AAC and MP3. M4R supports auditory masking - essentially discarding data with minimal loss of quality. And if you want to transfer to mp3, you can use MP3 Converter.
