I have a Motorola Krzr phone. Everything was going well for a while. I installed the phone tools CD that came with the phone on my computer (Windows Vista). I have been able to synchronize my contacts and directly update/maintain contacts via a USB connection. In that respect, the computer is able to detect the USB connection just fine.

I used to be able to directly access the memory card just fine. I recently discovered that the music files have to be mp3 and < 128kb quality to work. I was even able to download some mp3 files to the phone memory through the motorola software.

However, whenever I just plug the phone into the computer and allow the system to auto detect the connection, I get a pop-up error indicating that I have to format the card. I don't understand why. Never had to do this before. Don't see anything in my users manual about this. Even when I follow the directions and try to format the card, that doesn't work anyway. I just get a different error. Now that I have my contacts setup, now I need some way of accessing the 1GB memory card again. The software package that came with the phone doesn't seem to have a tool for accessing memory card. It always tries to put the music on the phone memory and there isn't enough space for that.

Okay, I finally found some answers that weren't previously obvious to me. I use Microsoft Windows Vista as an OS. Evidently, you have to right click on an icon in the taskbar to "close" the device before you unplug the USB cable. Evidently, I had not done this in the past. So I had a lot of stale connections that were never properly closed. So once I closed them all, I was able to reconnect the phone via USB and the card was directly accessible again.

Secondly, it seems that after I add new music files to the card I have to reboot the phone before the phone will actually notice them.

The option to close the connections was not intuitive since it is just a small, barely noticeable option in the task bar. Normally, when I use a USB flash storage device I just plug it in, use it, and unplug it when finished. But with my phone, it is critical to do close the connection via the OS prior to unplugging.

Hope that info helps someone else that might have this problem.
