How to quiet notification??

Ok...Im pretty overwhelmed with my new Droid...kind of a love/hate relationship. Here is a simple task I cant seem to figure out. When I am receiving a notification, how can a silence the ringtone? Even when I quickly open a text message, the ring continues to play on. I am using handcent also. Any suggestions??

I'm not familiar with handcent, but if you slide/swipe the speaker icon to the lock icon, the phone should go silent.

once your in the Droid swipe over to open control panel menu from the many lists choose SETTINGS and then choose "SILENT MODE"

This setting displays "All Sounds except media and Alarm are Silenced"

as example you can do this when you sleep but when you wake dont forget to turn it off

Resolved. It is necessary to pull down notification slide to silence a notification that is coming through.
