I check out my local Cingular store for a Sony car charger for my new
(Free from Cingular) Sony/Ericsson W600i.
They charge $29.99 for a car charger, but its not a Sony car charger,
it's a no-name charger from China that seems identical to the one I
could buy for $3.99 from eforcity.com
http://store.eforcity.com/cerik750cc01.html
And strangely enough the charger is $26.99 at Cingular's web site.

CSSON&model=W600i&ProductClass=CHARGING
And big surprise, Sony sells their W600i OEM Car Charger for $19.99 on
their web site.

Verizon does the exact same thing. Low quality accessories at high prices.

You must be new to cell phones and the free market in general. The prices at
the Cingular stores have always been absurd. They rely on lazy, uninformed
consumers. That's why God invented....shopping.

you probably went to a Cingular dealer and not the Corp store..
your always going to pay higher then 'online' prices in a store.. mostly
because it costs money to run a store.

Jack is actually a long time user. He just likes to ***** and whine like a
child about the "injustices" carried out on him by his current carrier. He
did it with Sprint and is now doing it with Cingular- his contract is
probably about to end.

One expects to pay more for "official" OEM merchandise, with the presumption
that it may work better, or be more compatible with one's name-brand
handset.
One does not expect to pay top dollar for cheap knockoffs, being sold by the
official retailer, as though the goods were of the same quality as OEM.
What is so difficult to comprehend about that?

The market doesn't work like that. If it were a ripoff, then no one would be
buying. What's happening is that people are putting a high value on
convenience and brand loyalty. That you don't have the same feelings doesn't
make them any less valid for others.

Many people expect that the carrier's own stores would be selling OEM
merchandise. It's not like going to Target or the flea market for
accessories, where it's clearly after-market.
You're correct that it's really the buyer's responsibility to know what
he or she is buying, but it's also unethical for the store to be selling
this junk at such high prices.

In fact the non-OEM charger might well be better than the OEM charger, which
is often the cheapest thing the OEM can find; e.g., my non-OEM car charger for
my Motorola phone is quite a bit better than the more expensive OEM charger.

Nonsense -- there's nothing remotely unethical.

Re: Cingular store ripoff pricing on accesories
That's largely due to high overhead. There's a price for convenience.

Well if you're ordering on-line, you can't look at the packaging. I
learned this when I ordered a phone from Verizon. I sent their
gawd-awful car charger, case, and headset back, at their expense.
Car chargers is where you really have to be careful, as almost all of
the after-market car chargers are pure junk.
