I've actually done it on PDA Connect (using a Treo 750 tethered to a laptop
with both Bluetooth and a cable), and it did work, just as I wrote.

I've seen no credible evidence that anyone has actually been dropped for heavy
use, and my own use has been pretty darn heavy with nary a peep from Cingular.

Pay-per-use is automatically removed when you get a data package.

    Correct.

The device you have. You can get one feature or the other, but not both.

Not sure as all three of the common onces never worked.

It would appear so. As for the PDA connecting, I'll address that in a
    response to John's post.

That was in the past...its all a new game now.

Besides, Cingular doesn't consider the Treo a PDA in the sense we would
think of one. It might look like a PDA, have all the features of a PDA,
advertised by Cingular as a PDA...but its different from the tech
    support side and data connecting.

This is all new, you might not have come across it yet and they may not
have caught you YET. What do you call "heavy"? What do you consider
evidence...DUH, why am I even asking YOU of all people THAT question???

My friend tells me it's still working.

Cingular does consider the Treo 650 a PDA, which is why it's on a PDA plan.

    Time will tell.

Credible evidence. Something more than an unsubstantiated rumor.

    You're projecting.

Unsubstantiated rumor like your supposed data usage? Hmmmm- stones and
glass houses are running through my head right now.

For reasons I don't understand, how it works seems to vary from one user
to another. When I was trying to do it, I could get a connection, but
kept getting disconnected. I think my longest connection was something
like fifteen minutes, typical more like one minute.

But other people have reported here using it with no problem.

Tell that to Customer Service...perhaps you could enlighten them.

    You missed my sarcasm.

Tell that to the guys down here that had to start up the data plan.

Ya know....there IS a world out there beyond your own limited experiences.

I'm still trying to sort this all out. I have the unlimited data
service for my Treo. It came setup with:
    APN= WAP.CINGULAR, User= [email protected]

I find that I can change the settings to
    APN= ISP.CINGULAR, User= [email protected]

and everything still seems to work. Am I going to get a surprise
per-use bill next month? I've not seen any differences in transfer
    speeds.

    PDA Connect Unlimited ($40/month)?

    >It came setup with:
    >APN= WAP.CINGULAR, User= [email protected]

That's MEdia Net. I believe that's included with PDA Connect Unlimited.

    >I find that I can change the settings to
    >APN= ISP.CINGULAR, User= [email protected]

That's Data Connect. I believe that's standard with PDA Connect.

I believe that either should work, and that there should be no difference on
your bill, although I recommend checking with Cingular and on your bill to be
sure. Advantages to Data Connect over MEdia Net include (a) optional data
compression and (b) ability to use VPN.

I have been using MediaNet Unlimited for quite some time for tethering and it seems to not be working now. I'm not sure if I have to change the settings to log in or either if they're cut me off because of high use.
I dont' want to have to go all the way to Data Connect for $59 unless I have to. It's hard to imagine it's the same price as their broadband connect service. I would imagine with time it'll go down in price and I'm sure it won't go up to the regular price of $79.99.
Also, for $44 I know I can go with PDA Connect if it works. What settings are people using on here to properly get PDA Connect as well as MediaNet to work?
