I was in the mall last night in Metairie (N.O. suburb) and the Cingular
employees were busy setting up new phones after hours. I spied several
new (to Cingular in THIS area) GSM phones from S/E, Nokia, etc. I asked
them through the locked security gate if they were stocking up GSM-only
phones. They said yes; available tomorrow!
I've been to the Cingular site and no new phones for Metairie/New
Orleans area codes there. Also no announcements in the newspaper.
Anyone know if the official (hard) opening was today?

Don't know if opening was today but do know that Scans were done for the
GSM upgrade. I know someone who drove in New Orleans and had scanned for
Cingular. Getting ready for web enabled phones. GSM uses different
equipment I think. Power levels, etc.
So soon we can drive and surf at the same time. Yikes!
