What's it for? I completely ignored it until I saw it on one of the new
Nokia's coming out.

It can be used for cutting and pasting in messages! If you have something
you want to copy, hold down the pencil key for about half a second, now if
you move the joystick left or right the text will be highlighted in blue,
keeping the pencil key pressed down click the copy button, if you now move
to where you want the text pasted to and again hold down the pencil key for
half a second you'll have a paste option!
Also the pencil key can be used for marking items that you want to delete or
move! The best way of seeing this work is to go into a message folder, hold
down the pencil key, if you now press the joystick in a 'tick' will appear
next to the message, now if you press the joystick downwards, the message
below it will also have a 'tick' appear and so on and so on! If you release
the pencil key, you can move past messages without ticks appearing, but if
you again hold the pencil key down, you can start 'ticking' messages again!
If you then click 'options' and use the move or delete options, all the
ticked messages will be actioned!
Hope this makes sense, turned out a little wordier that anticipated!
Chegs!

Re: Pencil button on the 6600
Also editing text....try holding it down and moving the joystick button left
and right....then using the left soft key to copy...use the right softkey to
paste....

YES!!!!!!!!! I even read some "reviews" wondering what it was for!! ARGH,
read the f'ing manual if you're going to review something!! It actually
works as a clipboard, so you can even cut/copy and paste between
applications!! Other "smart"phones that aren't so smart can't do this.
The switching T9 function is less useful as you can also do that by
double-clicking the #-key. Perhaps if you'd want number-mode.. but then I
just press and hold the key, this almost always works faster because in number
mode there's no way to insert a '-' or even a space for example. Usually when
typing numbers there is some sort of spacing or punctuation involved, like a
bank account or credit card number, or even phone number you'd want to put a
space between the area code and number. Can't do this in number mode as it's
strictly numbers only. So you end up spending the same time as you would using
the press-and-hold technique.

Re: Pencil button on the 6600
Great! This was a new one.
BTW you get number-mode also if you keep the # button pressed for a while.
(And back also)
