Hi, I am in the USA and I have never had a cell phone. I want to get a
cell phone with Symbian OS so I can use Jajah to seamlessly place
phone calls to North America and other countries free or very cheap
(cf. www.jajah.com). (You can also do it with Java but it seems that
Symbian is better - fewer buttons to push, more seamless.) I have been
using Jajah for 6 months but they just introduced this new thing of
placing calls w/ cell phone without your computer, for 2.5 cents per
    minute to many countries.

I have done a bit of research on the web and it seems that Symbian is
not used much by US cell phone carriers. Is that correct?

What cell phone models can I get that use Symbian and that major cell
phone carriers will be compatible with?

Presently I know that the Jajah plug-in works with Nokia 6600, 6630,
    7610 and N70.

    Thanks
    Best

    Interesting stuff.
It is like Skype, but without using a desktop or notebook computer.
It uses the possibilities of the inside "mobile" computer facilities of
    mobile phones.
Skype is also testing, but in beta phase.

Symbian has nothing to do with a phone "carrier". It is the system OS
(operating system) of several smart phones. Just like some PDA's use a
tiny Microsoft OS, or your own computer use Windows OS, Linux, Mac OS.
Phones and PDA's are just tiny computers. So they do have an operating
system. With the right software you can start applications.
You can do calls with a cell phone regardless which operating system is
used. It is made for making mobile calls ;-)

You can find it at JaJa itself.
    http://www.jajah.com/info/tools/mobile/

    - Motorola ( 2 models)
    - Nokia (13 models)
    - Samsung ( 1 model)

I guess, several other smart phones shall work to.
    http://www.symbian.com/phones/index.html

Keep in mind the smart phones mentioned at JaJa maybe do use
a special version of Symbian, but I can not get a proper answer which
different versions of Symbian are supported.

    I do use Nokia 6680
    Symbian OS Version: v8.0
    User Interface: S60

Other models with another Symbian version could work too but not tested?
That is just to find out try and error.

Maybe I shall get a try what it brings.
Thank you for your interesting stuff.

Interesting stuff indeed. But correct me if i'm wrong - I understand
that the skype approach would be wifi-based whereas jajah works over
the normal phone line on a callback basis.

I just installed the software on my nokia 6280 (only java, no symbian
unfortunately) - it seems to work ok. Goint to make some testcalls
    tomorrow ;-)

    cheers,

Skype is testing Symbian based Nokia Phones over G3 network, but didn't
    succeeed yet.
    http://www.telegraaf.nl/i-mail/50731...eld.html?p=1,1

Dutch newspaper article (29 sept 2006 --> very hot) saying that Skype
has a delay in introducing Skype by using Symbian on Nokia Phones.

    this.

Did it work? I am looking to get a phone that can do this, and give it
to the president of our school, who doesn't believe you can make such
free or cheap calls. But he doesn't use a computer either, so it has
to be one of these seamless cell phone setups. I want to get a good
set up that will work well.

Have installed the plugin just for a half hour.
Keep in mind, you can only install applications if you change the
default setting of "application manager" (have taken much time to find
out why I couldn't install it in first degree).

Go to menu, tools, (app) Manager, Options, Settings and set the
    "Software installation" to "On".

    I am still playing.
Seems it does function, but can not check it.
Looking at the website of JaJah, it seems if the plugin is enabled,
first an SMS should be send automatically, afterwards connection is made
to both mobile and other end.
But for now, I get a connection immediately, not knowing if it is by my
provider or via JaJah. Have to ask at forums of JaJah.

You should be able to tell if you are placing a call thru Jajah,
easily. When you place a call thru Jajah, your phone rings and you
hear a voice saying "Jajah is connecting your call" and then your
callee answers and you talk. Plus, there should not be charge for long
distance on your cell-phone bill. Plus - you can check your Call
History in the My Account after logging in at the Jajah site, and your
call will be listed there. BTW, before making any calls with Jajah you
would have to register your phone no. at www.jajah.com (or maybe it is
    different site in UK?).

    cheers
