Is there a data cable currently available for the Toshiba VM4050? If so
where can I purchase one, and how much does it cost? Would I need special
software to use the phone to allow a laptop to connect to the internet, or
does XP Home come with all the software needed to do this?

Also, I realize that technically, using the phone to allow a laptop to
connect to the internet is against the TOS, but is SPCS still looking the
other way when it comes to low-level usage, e.g. several MB a day?

Actually, that's also known as an Audiovox phone. I didn't see a USB cable
for the VM4050 on their site, nor did I see a cable on Futurevision.com 's
site either. Radio Shack carries USB cables but didn't see any VM4050 cables
there either. I'd suggest you email Audiovox from their site and ask whether
they have other models where the same accessories fit.

The cost of the cables normally run between $20 to $30, depending on who's
    selling it.

You will need the phone drivers, and again I don't know who has those. Check
out futurevision.com 's site & ask Audiovox. If you can find the drivers and
install them, then no, you won't need any additional software. All you will
need to do is set up a new DUN - Dial Up Network.

Yes, and as most of who do use it on an occasional basis, we thank them ...

Re: Data Cable for Toshiba VM4050?

Thanks. In addition to allowing one to access the internet, I assume that
these cables also allow one to back or sync up a phone's address book,
calendar, sounds, photos, etc. If so, is special software required to do
these things, or does XP already come with it?

I think the cables for audiovox cdm-9900/9950 will work (and that it's
basically the same phone). Best to check with the vendor before you buy, of
    course.

Let's get XP out of any conversation here. It doesn't carry diddley squat
for your phone Again, you need to go to www.futurevision.com to see if
they offer anything. They offer two different products, SnapSync, which can
sync your phonebook, and SnapMedia, for pictures and ringers, but again, you
need to see if they have that available for your model.

The data cable for the Audiovox 9900/9950 will work with the Toshiba VM4050.
However, it doesn't look like they're available yet. I contacted the folks
at www.wirelessphonegallery.com, and they're anticipating a shipping date of
    May 10.

You can pre-order one from 3gcables.com for $30. They are scheduled for
release by May 18 at the latest.

Thanks. Gotta get the phone first but the availability of a cable was one of
    the criteria for buying it.
