Hi
I'm visiting the states for 6 month, and I would like to get a sim card
with an american phone number. My phone supports the 1900MHz band that
is used in the states. I will only be using the cell phone very little,
I just like to have it for emergency calls.
How do I get the cheapest sim card for this usage?
Thank you very much

The USA has two nationwide GSM carriers, Cingular (www.cingular.com) and
T-Mobile (www.t-mobile.com).
Cingular uses both 1900MHz and 850MHz, so there would be many areas your
phone might not operate with a Cingular SIM. T-Mobile's native coverage
is 1900MHz-only, so it might be a better choice for your phone. Prepaid
T-Mobile SIMs can be purchased at T-Mobile stores for about $30 US but
you can find them on eBay much cheaper and many eBay sellers (many of
them are actually independent T-Mobile dealers) will mail them
internationally, so in addition to saving money, you'll also have the SIM
before you arrive, rather than wasting time hunting down a T-Mobile store
upon your arrival. T-Mobile SIMs include $15 US of airtime. (60 minutes)
An important thing to note if this is your first trip to the states with
a cellphone- unlike most of the world, the USA does NOT have a "caller
pays" system, so the cellular user pays for both incoming and outgoing
calls.
Good luck, and enjoy your stay!
