Anchorage, Alaska

Anyone ever been to Anchorage, Alaska ? Or do you live there ?

I'm planning a trip for me and my wife to go there in the fall, and was wondering what everyone's opinions are. Good places to eat ? What about shopping ? We have limited shopping (clothes and electronics wise) here in Whitehorse, being a smaller city and all, so what can we expect in Anchorage ?

And yes, I've google'd and read, but would like some personal opinions

i went on a cruise in alaska

its actually a nice place despite the fact its chilly stereotype

See, once a year I do electronics shopping when I'm travelling outside Whitehorse. Other than an overpriced, selection-less monopoly store we have here in town, there's no where to buy good electronic toys. So I save up money all year long, and go blow it all at once

And since I want to go to Alaska anyways this fall, I figured I'd blow it there.

I'd like to go to Alaska sometime also..
Was planning to go a few years back, then ended up moving to Hawaii, sad..
So make sure you let us know about your trip.
And if you ever want some electronics from good old japan just let me know, shipping isn't too bad if you get a few things, and a lot of prices are good.
Plus, sort of like Korea, bluray and such was released about 6 months ago here. Tons of toys :-)

I haven't been to Alaska, but did the cruise thing too....

from what I understand you will pay a premium for ANYTHING and everything in Alaska, especially food... are you certain you want to shop?

I thought 1,200 was steep when it first came out here, now it's like $600-$700

Best place to stay as in hotels is the BestWestern on 5'th and k st. You can catch all the free tram and busses just a block or two from there. End of aug first of sept. is Palmer Fair--biggest in the state. Trains/Fair tickets are cheap and the train runs till midnight.
Farmers market is just blocks from there Sat and Sunday. Big mall is in that area as well.
Catch a bus and you can shop at Sears, Walmart, Gotshalks Bestbuy, Gateway, just about anything big boxy.
Gwennies is the acclaimed ALASKAN food restraunt. I personally like Sourdoughs. They have a show in the evening that comes free with the meal. GREAT food.
Five movie plexes to choose from, Cerinos is a dinner theater and the coup de gras, Center for Preforming Arts has ongoing plays, opera and summer theater all summer. Plus the Museum. All of the above except some of the stores are available down town where the hotel is. Hopes this helps.

And trust me, things can't be any more expensive than here, lol. That and Anchorage is only a 10 hour drive from where I live, and it's a bigger city with all the big city amenities. Should make for a good vacation, I'll be sure to take lots of pics !

Dude, I've been to Whitehorse, I feel your pain. I used to live in Dawson Creek, B.C. Went up north a few times. Are the mosquitos and horse flies still big enough to carry away small children?

You can always buy things on the Internet and have it delievered to you!
