    (1) My CDMA Qualcomm QCP-860 phone has just died and I don't know
where to get a new battery (in Melbourne). Does anyone here know
    if/where I might get one ?

    (2) Also, if I get a new phone then what limitations would I have in
transferring my current phone number ? I am currently with Telstra on
a flexi plan. I am pretty sure I can only change to certain
brands/plans but don't know which ones.

    (3) I don't particularly want a new phone, or to change to the pre
paid system, BUT if I do then I am considering a Motorola V171. Would
that allow me to move across my CDMA phone number ?

Any help with any/all of the above queries appreciated.

    Regards, John.

No idea where you would get a battery for the phone. But I would be
surprised if Te$stra would restrict you in anyway from upgrading to a
GSM phone. Give them a call or drop into a store and ask.

Have a look at the Nokia's, they are much more friendly to use than
Motorola. Nokia 6101, 6102 6103 or the 6111 would probably be in the
same market as the Motorola V171.

Try http://cellink.com.au they could send you a battery.
As for taking your number to a another should not be a problem.

    Cellink have them:

None. As long as you are not locked into a contract with your current
service, you can move your number to any provider.

Given the old phone model you have, I would say that you are out of contract
with Telstra. In that case, you can move your number anywhere.

When shopping around, I would look at other providers as well as Telstra.
    Some fantastic deals out there...

No limitation. You can take your CDMA number to another CDMA phone, a
Telstra GSM phone, or any other network.

Dunno if that is GSM or CDMA, however you can always keep your number

You can move your number anyway.

WES in Sydney, overnight delivery. (Or I could sell you a cheap 860 with a
working slimline battery and car kit, that I used up till 18 months ago.)

You can take it with you to any other service.

Thank you Simon. I will keep that in mind in the future.

Okay, that concern seems to be alleviated. I wonder when Telstra would
add a fee for that ? Does anyone here know when/what circumstances ?
    Or cost ?

    >When shopping around, I would look at other providers as well as Telstra.

Yes, most of them pretty confusing. I don't want a mobile for outgoing
calls so the possibility of losing "credits" if I forget to "top up"
    would aggravate me no end.

    Thanks. Interesting.

    http://www.cellink.com.au

    http://www.wescomponents.com/

    http://www.wagner.net.au/

    All have the same address.

As CDMA appears to be going in a few years I was hoping for a battery
to last until then. Thank you for the offer however. Appreciated.

    Regards, John.

If you move your number away from Telstra they charge something like $7 from
memory. Nothing big enough to worry about anyway.
If you stay with Telstra, they just change your number over to the new
    service.

In that case, you should go for one of the $0 plans out there.

    Some examples:

    www.unisonmobile.com.au/products/mobile.jsp - Vodafone GSM network
www.sctelco.com.au/YourMobileMain.htm - this is a good one because you can
get $0 CDMA as well as Telstra GSM from tham
www.exetel.com.au/mobile_plans.php - they have a $5 plan and stand out
    because of no flagfall
    www.koalatelecom.com.au/mobiles.html - another $0 plan

I'm sure other people will add to this list...

Yes, things are good in that regard with Telstra
