I'm confused about how voice mail works in conjunction with call forwarding.
If I haven't set anything in my phone's forwarding (V551) it seems like all
    calls to
my phone if not answered go to Cingulars voice mail and I get a text message
    notifying me.
    OK that's what I'd expect.

But if I set up a call forwarding on my phone (for say, unavailable), does
    this over-ride the voice mail?
And then how do I set it back to go to Cingular's voice mail? Do I have to
    know the
Cingular number or is it just known to my phone?

I had a lot of trouble with voice mail not working to begin with and don't
want to mess it up now that it's working.

Default Call Forwarding No Answer is to voice-mail; i.e., they are the same
thing. You can change it to some other number, in which case forwarding
    charges apply.

There are 4 kinds of GSM forwarding:
    1. busy: if you refuse a call by hitting a command on your phone.
2 no answer: if it rings for more than the allotted time
3 unavailable: if the system can't find your phone
4 unconditional: all calls are forwarded with the system trying to
    locate the phone.

You can forward to any number, of course you'll get charged.
Incidentally, t-mobile provides 500 minutes a month for forwarding, of
    types 1, 2 and 3.

On my phone I can control them all using built in commands, or one can
use GSM commands, which can be found at

It somewhat depends on what the standard procedure is with cingular
and also depends on whether you are a GSM or TDMA subscriber.

Key *#61# <send> and you'll get "requesting" and then a message
probably "Active for voice calls" and perhaps have something that you
can press for "details" and when you press that it will give you the
choice of number and delay. Number is the number being forwarded to
prior to forward to voicemail. If you get 'active for voice calls'
your calls will be forwarded to the voicemail number.

Re: Voice mail vs. call forwarding

Thanks for the responses guys. But none of you answered my question.

I understand that there are different kinds of forwarding (unavailable, busy, etc.)
But what I don't understand is how to reconnect the normal, default voicemail once I have set forwarding to another number.

Say I want to forward calls to my landline for a few hours. But later want to go back to Cingulars voicemail. How do I change the
feature on my phone? Do I replace my landline number with a Cingular voicemail number or just turn the feature off?
I can't see how to do that from the phone's menu without actually changing it--which I don't want to experiment with.

Just cancel call forwarding. Apparently there is a "master call forward
no answer" feature active IF you have voice mail and no other forwarding
command is active. So if you have calls forwarded to another number and
then cancel call forwarding the phone will revert to forwarding to voice
mail--you do not have to "re-forward" the phone to a voice mail number.
I seem to recall a few reports here of that getting turned off and CS
had to refresh something but it's very rare.

As I understand it, all CF functions were defaulted to your voicemail
when your service was provisioned. If one wants to send all cell calls
to some other temp number, one simply activates unconditional CF to that
number. Later on, when one deactivates unconditional CF to that temp
number, it reverts back to your voicemail number because the system
remembers what it was before the temp CF was arranged. Caveat: DO NOT
use Cancel All Call Forwarding, because it will, including CF to voicemail.
