    Hey,

My Cingular contract has been expired for some time now, and my phone just broke, so it was time for an upgrade.

I found a phone that I liked on cingular.com and ordered it. I decided to keep my plan exactly as it is and to just get the new phone.

Then a short while later I get a confirmation e-mail saying that I ordered the new phone, plus a new SIM card.

Why did they give me a new SIM card? Can't I just use the one that is in my current phone? Is this some hidden fee that I should be concerned about??

    Thanks guys.

If you already have a sim card, then don't worry about it. With every new phone purchase a sim card is usually included in the box. I suggest you keep it as a back-up because I get plenty of customers that need to purchase replacement sim cards.

Or sell it on ebay and make some money back towards the phone.

    I am cingular employee

This is the way it works. Sim cards are always sent for free and at no extra charge when buying a new phone. The only reason why they do this is because up until about a year ago cingular used 32K sim cards wich held less phone book entries and had less storage space for roaming profile updates that we send out periodically.

Now they had switched over to using 64K sim cards which hold double the phone book entries, more updates and apprently allow you to register fatser to our networks.

It really wont make much of a difference which sim you use. However if you call cingular to register your new phone when it is received by mail, the upgrade is parked on your account and they simply click a button that registers the new SIM # and serial # for your phone. I recommend if you want to use the new sim card, that you first copy all phone book entries from your sim card directly onto your phone. Then call cingular have new equipment activated. Your old sim will now be garbage. Then copy your phone book entries off of new phone and onto new sim.
