As there are now phones with WiFi , such as Nokia N80, and there will be
more, I wonder if it would be possible to download the Skype software and
use such a mobile as a Skyphone instead of a WiFi enabled laptop at home or
when travelling?
Thanks

Re: Skype on the mobile phone?
You can certainly use Skype on any Windows Mobile with a decent
processor - my SPV M500 and SPV M3100 are both OK for this.
T-mobile's new web'n'walk add on - £22.50 for 10gig of usage - now
specifically allows voip usage.

Yes if the phone is running Windows Mobile 5 / PPC 2003 (ie: A Microsoft
OS) - ie: not the N80...

Putting Skype onto a Symbian phone has proved more difficult than had
been hoped, according to an interview given by co-founder and chief
executive Niklas Zennstrom to a Finnish newspaper, as reported by Yahoo!
News.
"When we begun developing the mobile phone version we didn't realise the
number of technical obstacles. It is challenging and is taking much
longer than expected."
Skype already has a version available for Pocket PC, which works well
enough over Wi-Fi connections, but Symbian has many other devices and
with increasing support for Wi-Fi and more low-cost data tariffs, a
Skype client would be a useful addition, and one the company had hoped
to launch last year.

AFAIK with a windows mobile PDA running skype it has been possible to use VOIP
with bluetooth for a long time. Skype doesn't need Wi-fi speeds.
Make sure you are on the right T-mobile tarrif however.

What I have in mind is using WiFi hotspots that are appearing around the
world, some with free access. I do not think bluetooth would be much use
when travelling. It seem to me to be an attractive solution to have in one
small WiFi enabled device a mobile phone, camera, e-mail and Skype. For a
full internet access to brows the Web etc., should I need it, I could go to
an internet café.
