Re: Rally and Rubik's cube
It amounted to countless hours of fun two decades ago, but the competitive aspect of the game has become more intense recently. Today's top "cubers" can finish the puzzle in as little as 15 seconds. The rules haven't changed, but the game's not the same.
Forty top cubers showed off their skills to a crowd of about 150 at the International Rubik's Cube Tournament at San Francisco's Exploratorium on Saturday.
The cube, thanks to the Internet and nimble-fingered cubers like 14-year- old Shotaro "Macky" Makisumi, is enjoying a surge in popularity not seen since the puzzle's heyday in 1981 and 1982.
"It's very addictive, and it spreads like a virus," said Tyson Mao, 20, whose Rubik's Cube Club from the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena has sponsored six tournaments around the state since January 2004. "One person will learn it, get hooked and then teach others."
The tournament consisted of a number of events, including the standard competition (known to cubers as the 3 x 3 x 3), as well as one-handed, blindfolded and the fewest moves.
Shotaro, the Michael Jordan of Rubik's Cube, broke his own blindfolded record with a time of 2 minutes, 57 seconds. He also owns the 3 x 3 x 3 record at 12.11 seconds.
Many competitors in attendance were babies or not even born when the original Rubik's Cube craze hit. Most learned the puzzle through Web sites that post tips on shaving seconds off their times.
"I know the power of the cube," she said. "It's come back after one generation, and the Internet has played a big role."
Fridrich, the national champion of Czechoslovakia in 1982, no longer competes but has become a sort of guru to today's cubers. Fridrich, who now resides in New York state, says California is the state most smitten by the cube, thanks to the tournaments held by Mao's club. She says it's also caught on in Europe.
Bill McGaugh, 55, never thought he'd see a resurgence. The high school math teacher from Temecula (Riverside County) said he could finish the puzzle in about 45 seconds during the peak of its popularity. By the time he got it down to under 30 seconds, the fad had died a quick death.
"I cubed in isolation," he said.
Not quite. McGaugh has been using the cube as a learning tool in his classes for the past 20 years.
Stuart Lerner, 42, of San Francisco similarly draws inspiration from the cube in his work as a financial consultant. His message: In business, as with the cube, one side of the company affects all the other sides.
Lerner thought about competing Saturday but changed his mind after seeing that most competitors were done in about a minute. Lerner says he averages about 21/2 minutes.
Young cubers like Timmy Wong, 15, can beat that time by about two minutes.
"It's something that keeps me from getting bored," said Wong, who plans to start a cube club at Fremont High in Sunnyvale.
