I have about 10% luck with voice dialing. Much of the time it won't even
recognize the command, "name dial". I've input all the numbers on the
learning mode, but don't see any way to improve on word sounds. And I
have said "name dial" a whole lot of different ways.

Does the little lady in the phone have a British accent? If she does and
you don't, you'll want to change it to the US English version. Step by
step instructions and files are at www.motox.info. I did mine and it
    made all the difference!

Ah, bingo, I rather think! She's a Brit, but I've gotten so used to
hearing a British accent in so many adverts that it didn't clue me
in.....nor did the European style charger plug and adaptor....

I presume this implies I can reset it to American English.... but I am
good with several English accents... maybe I'll have some fun. Maybe not.

I thought I was pretty good too but it didn't work well. My friend from
the UK had no problems at all. Once I made the changes all was well.
You'll need to change some VST files and reflash the language pack which
is all pretty easily done. Everything you need is at www.motox.info and
    www.planetmotox.net.

'Ceptin' I am onna Mac, and I don't believe those tools fly for me....
and I did try out my Brit speak last evening, and got through to two
    number I've never before reached..

Is there a way to have, using the phone only , a voice announcement
that I'd make, that says the name of the caller? I could do that on my
lousy Sony Ericcson..... I could produce same on my computer, and upload
them to the phone as mp3's and then assign them, but looking for
    something simpler.

You can disable voice dial and use voice tags which is the feature
you're describing. Surly you must know someone with a REAL PC where you
could mod your phone. My biz partner uses MACS but he says he can run
most WIN apps on it too.

I probably do somewhere or other, or I could spend a few bucks or two
hundred and get Windows booting right onto my MacBookPro, but that's a
    project for another day.

Can the whole phone be reprogrammed to the US version, and include
iTunes, assuming I can get someone with a PC to run it for me?

The iTunes version is different and cannot be converted. Many have tried
to no avail. Don't despair though. Those of us lucky enough to have
non-iTunes versions are better off as the iTunes fuction is slow and
limited to 50 or 100 songs. Using the DAP program or just Sounds is
faster and has no song limits. Personally, I prefer to just use
    Playlists in Sounds.
