Got the car BUT the phone is analog. Where can I find the ESN number? Phone has
an "MSN" # on it but that doesn't work. Phone is a Motorola/BMW CPT6000. Any
way to get the ESN # through the keypad? I'm able to get 911 and 611 but that's
    it.

Since Verizon isn't activating NEW analog accounts I want to try activating the
phone using they're website where they have a feature enabling you to replace
your existing digital phone if its being "repaired" etc with another one
provided you type in the ESN #. Or if anyone in NYC did this another way please
    let me know.

    Thanks,

    Tony

    Re: 1998 BMW car phone

The ESN change feature should workwith no issues I do it quite frequently
between a digital Qualcomm and Motorola StarTac 8500 Analog Only. But I will
add that the account I do it with was originally an Analog Account from way
back. Cant be sure if that does influence it. I have been told by Tech
Support that they need to distibguish between the two in account setup, but
I have read way too many others who have done it as well.
Now,second issue. ESN. The ESN can be brought up through the Handset
provided you can get phone into Test Mode. Unfortunately, that phone
requires a Test Mode Adapter, or someone knowledgeavble to short the
transceiver out and put in test mode. Now the great thing there is, if you
are able to get to the transceiver to get the test adapter put on, then you
can also just get the ESN off the transceiver label. CATCH 22. Now, if you
find the right technician or management at a Cellular Dealer, you can read
the ESN over the air using a Cellular Test Analyzer. But , of course, that
requires someone who is cool. Since they wont activate Analog unless it was
originally an analog acct, they will say "Why do we need to read it, we wont
activate it? That excuse or technique is up to you. Last but not least, you
could get phone programmed, then call Tech Support and tell them that the
dealer programmed your phone and youcant make a call "What is the problem?"
Then if you get the "Non swift" they may read the ESN at the switch and fix
it. Keep in mind they can see what kind of phone it is and may tell you
forget it. Also, they will NEVER give you the ESN over the phone, well not
    supposed too.
    Good luck.

Also, are you able to even get into the phone to program it? If security
code has been chjaned from default 6 0's (oooooo) It then becomes a moot
point, because, youll need to put in test mode to program it. And getting to
the transceiver in a BMWer could be tricky. You may need go to BMW dealer
and ask some guy walking around, where do they put the phone "box" in this
model. Also, if bought from a local dealer, they will have record on phone
    as well.

OK, that sit, my complete 20 years of phone experience regards to your
    dilemma.

I've never had an analog phone with Verizon -- think that goes back to the days
of Cellular One as it was called. Whats funny is when I first tried the ESN
switch with Verizon's Website it activated my old Motorola 8160 which is NOT
the ENS # I typed in the Website. I had to call them up to reactivate my v60!
;-) But now I have the ESN # for the v60 so I won't need them anymore. ;-)

    >I have read way too many others who have done it as well.

Yeah this is what I'm hoping for -- someone told me I can find an 8 hex (?) ESN
number in the trunk of the car?

    >Now,second issue. ESN. The ESN can be brought up through the Handset

I can get into TEST MODE as I saw on one of the BMW boards a way to do it --
BUT I don't know where to go from there to get the ESN #! I get a flashing
screen with some numbers on it -- can you help?

    Unfortunately, that phone

If I go to the BMW dealer (or stealer) I might eliminate all this nonsense and

Go to google and search for "Motorola bible"
Or use one of these links.
    http://www.qsl.net/n9zia/motorola.txt
    http://packetstormsecurity.nl/cellul...a/motbible.txt

The Motorola bible will have most of the information you need.

Call waiting has nothing to do with the phone.
All older cell phones can use call waiting.

Call ID depends on the phone you have.
A lot of the older analog phone supported call ID.
And on the phone that don't support it, some won't
be affected by having it turned on, and some will be
    adversely affected.
It is the luck of the draw.

You can forget about having your system wired for digital.
A true installed digital system doesn't exist for the USA.

You would have to have one of those ugly phone cradles installed
To hold a digital hand held phone,Or go with a new on star system.

    ????????????????????????????????????
I didn't get one popup with any of those links?????????
All the first two is, is .TXT files, nothing that can generate a popup.

I would love to know what model of phone they were installing!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The only true installed phone with separate handset I know of in the USA
is the old tried and true 3W phone with car kit.

Amazing....must be real FOGGY in London, eh? ANY BMW (7 series anyway) from yr
2000 ON has digital wiring AND phones (CPT 7000 and CPT 8000) with controls on
the steering wheel & nav screen. Mine does to but its ANALOG (CPT6000). If I
wanted a handsfree kit I could go to any Radio Shack. I like being able to use
the car's built in mike, having the stereo muted and controling the phone via
    the steering wheel.

I see where I am getting mixed up here.

I don't call those true installed phones.
An installed phone is one that can't be removed from the vehicle
in any way, shape, or form.
The ones you are referring to are just portable phones plugged
into a fancy integrated car mount.

I thought (and others thought) you had an actual installed car phone.
That's why they was telling you to follow the antenna cable until you
found the transceiver portion of the cellular phone, which is separate from
the handset that would be by the front seat.

The 6000 uses a portable hand held phone.
Just take the phone out of the holster and take the battery pack off.
You will see various numbers on the back stickers on the phone.
One of them will be the ESN.
The ESN will be an 8 digit hexidecimal number.
(ie) it will only contain the digits 0123456789ABCDF
And it will be on a sticker with bar codes above each number.
