We have a Virgin Mobile phone -
We thought the wife and/or son would use it
vs the other SPCS phone that mom has -
(It was cheaper than migrating from my $30 plan to the $50 plan
and then adding the other SPCS phone = $50+$10 = $60).
Well - it's been interesting since neither
really use the phone when out of the house -
So - we have a SPCS phone that costs $20/month
and also the VM phone that costs $7/month ($20 every 90 days)

ok - now the observation - for say a year -
in the long run, the VM would be cheaper - $20 x 4 = $80
    vs the SPCS lowest monthly $20 x 12 = $240

and both costs are really sunk - as they go un-used
it's just more evident when you look at the VM online balance,
and it keeps going up every 90 days

It really sounds like you don't need a cell phone at all if you don't
use it much. But they are handy to have in emergencies. My
suggestion to you would be to cancel with Sprint when your contract is
up and pick up a second Virgin Mobile phone as they seem to be one of
the cheapest prepay services out there -- $20 with a lengthly 90
    expiration date.

Which VM phone do you use?

If all you use it for is emergencies try this.

Any phone, activated or not can dial 911. Just cancel sprint and leave
the phone off all the time. If somethings happens, turn it on and dial
    911. You cant make or recieve any calls though.

If you need to be able to make calls, buy the VM phone, don't activate
it, don't add any money. They will shut it off after 90 days, but when
you need to make a call, use a credit card to add money and turn it back
    on.

Why not activate it? You get $10 worth of free calls that way.
