Hello,
I am a student in the USA and i am originally from Europe. I would like to have/buy a cell phone that can be used both in the USA and in Europe. I want when in the us to put the sim card for cingular and when in Europe to put the simcard for my home cell company. I tried this with the cell phone i have from cingular but it did not work. I assume my cell is not equipped for that.
Please give me some hints, links and advices as to the best option for me.
If this thread has been discussed before, please refer me to the particular link.
Thanks in advance

you need an unlocked gsm phone. depending on your cingular phone model, you may just be able to unlock your current phone for use as you described.
but it must be unlocked, and be compatible to europe's reception bands. a quad-band phone would do this.

check ebay for unlock phone. make sure it is tri-band phone that have 1800mhz and 1900mhz frequency. europe use 1800mhz and u.s and canada use 1900 mhz.
there's alot of triband phone but i suggest the nokia 3650,3660,6600. the 36xx series goes around $100 off ebay and the 6600 is around $250 not bad for a video phone.

to clarify, the u.s. uses both 850 and 1900. so you need both of those. i assume by tri-band you were referring to 850/1800/1900 bands.
.....
put up a price range, or other guidelines for phone selection. i'll try to suggest one, or at least point you in the right direction. (for instance, camera phone, mp3, etc....)
