i recently purchases the v551, which is my first cell fone and i am new to all of this. I pretty much have everything figured out, but the one feature i really want to do is to record my own ringtones. can anybody walk me through, if i hear a song playing that i want as my ringtone, how to record it? this is not in the manual, so help would be appreciated.

The reason why is not in the manual is because is not possible.
You need a usb cable and drivers like phone tools to record a song , edit, save to your PC then transfer to your phone via usb cable.

I found it rather simple... took the mp3 of the song I chose and, using a file-splitting program, I carved out the piece I wanted for my ringtone (the chorus of the song I chose is about 15 seconds long... I read somewhere that ringtones should be less than 30 seconds). Then I uploaded that 15 second mp3 to my personal webpages (most ISP's provide their users with a limited amount). Connected the phone to the internet and typed in my mp3's location where it says "go to URL". The phone did the rest... downloaded it and when it was done asked me if I wanted it to save as a ringtone.

Sony Sound Forge, and either a USB cable or Bluetooth connection should be all you need to make your own ringtones. I have the V555, which is BT enabled, and I believe the V551 has pretty much the same functions as the 555. One other way I found to make ringtones is to use an mp3 encoder, like DBPowerAmp, convert the mp3 to .wav, cut the clip from the .wav file with soundrecorder, then run it back through DBPowerAmp to convert it back to mp3 format.
