I recently got a V551 on a Cingular plan with the Media Basic package. I think its a very nice looking phone with a lot of features. I'm very happy with my phone and have been having a lot of fun learning about all the things I can do with it.

I wanted to hear what other V551 owners had to say.

    v551 opinions

I too recently got a Motorola V551 and had a bad experience with it. The battery would go dead in two days on standby and sooner than that if I made any calls or took any pictures/videos.

I sent it back, under warranty, and have another V551 which I received yesterday. Is anyone having the same problem with battery life?
I also bought a new battery and am going to charge it according to directions and see if the new phone eats up the battery like the old one. Otherwise I like the phone and all its capabilities.

    What has been your experience???

I was reading in another thread about short battery life for V551s. I've not had problems with my battery quickly discharging. I can go days at a time between charges, whether on standby or if I've been actively talking. I seldom hear a hardcore cell user who is satisfied with their battery life. I tend to keep a home and mobile charger at the ready.

Besides the battery, tho, how do you like the features of the phone itself?

Here's Cingular's definition of MEdia Net

"MEdia Net lets you browse the Internet with your wireless phone. Think of it as the highway down which other MEdia features travel—downloading polyphonic ringtones and games, sending photos, and more."

It has (very) limited ability to browse the web. You can use it to check the balance of your minutes and Cingular bill. You can check web-based e-mail if your mail server is Yahoo or another major portal.

You can read about it here:

    I second that

Yeah, I agree about the reception. I haven't gone anywhere yet where the signal wasn't good. Not sure if that's to the phone's credit or Cingular.

Yes, each time your browser sessions closes, you're told how much data has been transferred. That's upload and download combined.

The Media Net package with the 3MB data package is called Media Works, and costs $19.99 a month. There's the lite version of that called Media Basic, which gives you 500kb a month, with .02 cents per kb thereafter. Your left soft key may say Recent. If it does, select Recent and select Data Volumes. Then select All Data Sessions. Then select Total Data Transferred. You'll get a screen showing your lifetime history of upload and download transfer. If you're heavy into ringtone and wallpaper downloading, or really check your news and web-based mail a lot, you'll quickly exceed that. The Media Works with 3MB of transfer really isn't too bad. I used mine pretty heavily and in half-a-month used about 1.5 MB. There is also an unlimited bandwidth plan for 25.99, but I can't imagine anybody wanting to pay that much. Also, bear in mind you're paying for data transfer only, not time online.

Several quick ways. Choose Settings/Web Sessions/Go To URL. Then enter the WAP site you'd like to visit. Bear in mind if the site you want to see doesn't support WAP, you'll not get the page to load.

In answer to your questions about the ringtones, I can tell you to keep searching. Use Google.com using different keyword combinations. Eventually you'll run into a site that has a simple process for downloading free ringtones. Can't guarantee you'll find exactly what you're looking for; you'll really have to weed out the bad sites until you stumble across a good one.

    Hope any of this helps.

Not a problem. It can be confusing at first.

You can access Media Net and never download anything, but you still transfer information back and forth between the network and your phone. Many people think in terms of downloading meaning only the bandwidth used when you're getting a file. But your phone is in a steady state up uploading and downloading, and that includes all the 'hidden' data that makes up the page you're looking at.

Sometimes I'll fire up Media Net but close it before I really do much browsing. When the session closes a message will say, "Total data transfered: 2,000 bytes" (Or 2kb). That's normal. It takes a minimal amount of bandwidth just to pass information back and forth to set up your web session. All those little data transfers eventually add up to your alloted bandwidth. After that you pay 2 cents per kilobyte. (Media Works package is 1 cent per kilobyte)

With Media Net, you're being charged according to data transfer, not time online.
