I need some advice on selecting a new carrier that will work driving
from central Texas to the San Angelo area. Cingular told me that I had
the choice of only one phone is this correct? Have had Alltel but they
don't have service out in San Angelo. I think my choices are Cingular
or Sprint???

They should have two GAIT phones one Nokia6340i and a Sony Ericsson TU62u,
good choice for someone who will be in several different markets
and they do limit you to these phones if you don't want to pay roaming fees.

I have driven out thata way without problems with my AT&T WS TDMA phone many
many times. No problems. I have not been that way with my GSM phone though.

This is a tough one since the area in question is segmented into a
number of smaller carriers, many of which are not very friendly to
roamers (Concho Cellular, Five Star Wireless, West Central Wireless,
Mid-Tex Cellular, etc.) (see
http://people.ku.edu/~cinema/wireless/southwest.html). If you don't
leave the state very often, your best bet is a state-wide plan with
either Cingular (Texas Statewide Plus) or Verizon Wireless (Local
Digital Choice). Both of these plans will give you 100% coverage
within the state and absorb any roaming charges from the smaller
carriers.
The nationwide plans typically do not cover some of these
non-roaming-friendly providers, ie. neither VZW's America's Choice nor
Cingular Preferred Nation include Concho Cellular or West Central
Wireless, one of which is crucial to travel through that area.
Do not even think about going with Sprint PCS or T-Mobile for such a
rural area.

If you have SprintPCS, you'd need to go to Sam's and buy a Phone card,
so you could use a pay phone in all the places your cell wouldnt work.
