Here I am going to be comparing the Apple iPhone 5 with the LG G2. At first glance, you might think that the LG G2 isn’t in the same league as Apple’s latest smart phone but I am hoping I will be able to change your mind by the end of this comparison. This is the first top end smart phone LG has released and I understand why people are skeptical about it, but considering the fact that the LG G2 has already stumped the Nokia Lumia 1020, the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Sony Xperia Z I don’t see why it can’t comfortably win this comparison. So let’s get started...

Size and weight

The iPhone 5 measures 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6 mm and the LG G2 measures 138.5 x 70.9 x 8.9 mm. In terms of weight, the iPhone 5 weighs 112 g while the LG G2 weighs 143 g. But, while the iPhone 5 clearly trumps the LG G2 in terms of size and weight, it is important to look at the reasons why before awarding this point to Apple. The iPhone 5 has a much smaller display than the LG G2 and even the battery on the LG G2 is more than double the size of the iPhone 5.

Keeping the above reasons in mind, I will call this point a draw because this point isn’t only about being smaller but about which manufacturer can fit more technology into as small a body as possible.

Display

When you compare the displays on both these smart phones you will notice that the LG G2 is far ahead of the iPhone 5. The iPhone 5 has a 4.0” IPS LCD touch screen with a pixel density of 326 ppi. That’s pretty decent but when it’s compared to the monster 5.2” IPS LCD touch screen and pixel density of 423 ppi on the LG G2, I think the winner is quite clear. The LG G2 comes with the latest Corning Gorilla Glass 3 as well which makes the touch screen that much harder to scratch.

You don’t need to be a genius to see that this point clearly goes to the LG G2.

Memory & Storage

The iPhone 5 was considered one of the best smart phones in the industry when it was announced in September last year and it looks like the LG G2 is headed down the same path. While the iPhone 5 has just under 1 GB of RAM on board the LG G2 has double that at 2 GB. One point in favor of the iPhone 5 though is that its maximum clock speed is 1066 MHz while the RAM on the LG G2 has a maximum clocking speed of 800 MHz. Then again the LG G2 does have industry leading LPDDR3 RAM while the iPhone 5 has the older LPDDR2. The iPhone 5 is available in 3 versions with 16, 32 and 64 GB of storage while the LG G2 is available in 2 versions with 16 and 32 GB only.

I really feel like the LG G2 should win this point for superior technology but the iPhone 5 does just enough to deserve a draw.

Camera

The iPhone 5 comes with an 8 MP shooter on the back and a 1.2 MP front facing camera. The LG G2 comes with a 13 MP primary camera and a 2.1 MP front camera. Honestly there isn’t much difference between pictures taken from an 8 MP and a 13 MP camera. But when you start comparing features, the LG G2 proves why it is the better smart phone. The iPhone 5 has digital image stabilization while the LG G2 has optical image stabilization (a quick read up about both confirms that optical is better than digital). Video recording on the LG G2 is at an amazing rate of 60 fps while the iPhone 5 has the standard 30 fps video recording rate. Also, the LG G2 has other features like ISO control, voice activation, self-timer, effects, etc. which aren’t there on the iPhone 5.

I think this is sufficient proof why this point should go to the LG G2.

OS & Performance

The iPhone 5 runs on Apple iOS 6.1 while the LG G2 runs on Android’s latest operating system 4.2.2 (JellyBean). The iOS 6.1 is quite a handy little operating system and I don’t think the LG G2 can win this point simply because of its operating system. In terms of technology, the iPhone 5 has a Dual core, 1300 MHz, Apple Swift processor and Apple A6 chip while the LG G2 has a Quad core, 2260 MHz, Krait 400 processor and Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 MSM8974 chip. In terms of graphics, the iPhone 5 comes with a PowerVR SGX543MP3 processor while the LG G2 comes with an Adreno 330 processor.

This is a point where LG has thrashed everyone it has faced and the story is the same here. The point goes to the LG G2.

Battery

The iPhone 5 comes with a 1,440 mAh battery which has a standby by time of just over 9 days. Even in September 2012, that was pretty low and nothing has changed. The LG G2 comes with a whopping 3,000 mAh battery and even though there isn’t any information available regarding its battery life I am sure it will easily be more than 10 days.

I think Apple needs to care a little less about the weight of their smart phones and put in slightly bigger batteries. The point goes to the LG G2.

Price

While you can pick up the iPhone 5 for around $ 670 (free of contract) the LG G2 is rumored to cost just $ 630 (free of contract). Now, why would anyone even think of picking up the iPhone 5 when you can get a smart phone which is so much better for $ 40 less.

Conclusion

The final score reads 5 points to 0 in favor of the LG G2. Plain and simple, the LG G2 is a much better smart phone than the iPhone 5 and is a perfect example of how much technology can advance in a little over 11 months. Let’s hope Apple has something outstanding in store for later this year.
