Long story short. I worked at a summer camp this last summer with a lot of international staff. Guy likes girl. Girl likes guy. Guy lives in America while girl lives in Australia and keeping a relationship going is going to be near impossible without a cheap way to do international long distance.

Any advice?

Do you already have a cell plan? If not, find the cheapest per minute rate for a cell phone you can find. Even cheaper if you don't call from a cell phone. Then use an international long distance calling cards. Avoid calling using the LD with the cell. Very few providers offer decent International rates.
onesuite.com, for example offers Aus calling from as low as 2.9 cents/min when calling to an AUS landline. Google can be your friend to find others.
