Help I have taken to repair, software reset in the phone, I have taken into repair again, they disabled EDO or EVO or whatever the heck it is, saying this phone doesn't switch automatically to this mode and when it tries it connects to net. I have disabled this, 2 days later it connects to the internet, all hours of the day and all hours of the night. No user interaction at all.

Bell support is well not there, they have no idea, I can't get a new phone because I am 1 day past 30 days getting it, and I can't use buyers remorse because I didn't know there was an issue until I got my bill.

I am about ready to pay $1600 to get out of my contract and get Kodoo/Rogers/Telus.

    can anyone help me here?

Hi. I have exactly the same issue with my R610. On each monthly bill I have several dozen listings for data usage... all of them for very short periods of time and none of them initiated by the user. Luckily none of them have cost me anything ... until I happened to take my phone to the USA... then I got dinged with a data roaming charge. (only 9cents, but it's the principle. And is it a harbinger of things to come?)

    Have you found any solution?

FYI, Koodoo is owned by Telus..... just so you know.

Anywho, to the issue you're having. Are you CERTAIN it's doing this all on its own ? Is there possibly someone else who could be using the phone while you're not supervising it (kids, pets, etc) ? Honestly, short of taking a video of the unit doing it, it's going to be hard to get any sales reps or repair centers to believe you. Not saying you're lying or anything, just saying, I've personally never seen a phone load a browser on its own, and I've seen several thousand phones over the years.

    Hi,

It is strange. The phone is closed (it's a slider) and there is nothing going on in the UI. It's usually sitting on a table or in a bag. The duration of each connection is pretty short (10-60seconds) and the data volume is very low (0.0010 MB - 0.0060MB).

The phone isn't used more than 2 hours each month (usually 30-45 mins per month) so it's pretty easy to keep track of the activity. And there's no kids or pets in the house

The software is doing something on its own in the background. Maybe checking for software updates? Could it be a virus?

Re: Samsung SCH-R610 Connects constantly to Net

Glad to see that i'm not the only one with this problem. At first i thought I was doing something bad or that simply raising the flap would trigger a small blip on the net.

I've actually noticed that the access to the net follows a pattern. For example in my case every Sunday morning 7:37AM there's a small amount of data being transfered. There's 4 similar access on Saturdays.

It seems that there no such thing when i'm outside of my hometown. I went away for 4 days and there was no access to the net.

I've called customer service and had similar experience as the original poster. No clue how to turn it off, they have referred me to the Bell Store for assistance. I didn't try that since nowhere on the internet could i find how to turn it off, i assume the Bell Store is not better than the Internet ! :-)

I've tried to reason the customer support person pointing out the pattern in the access. The answer was "It IMPOSSIBLE sir that the phone connects without authorization, and having so many access there's nothing we can do"...

But i've learned on a second call to Bell support that my account has 512kb without charges. I'll see after a couple of months, but i hope this freebie should be enough to cover the unauthorized access. You might want to get a similar exception.

Hopefully Samsung will allow to turn the access to the net at some point.

Re: Samsung SCH-R610 Connects constantly to Net

Yesterday I happened to be looking at my latest bill and noticed that there is a pattern in how it connects... a very distinct and repeated pattern. These are the connections that it makes:

    Sat
    10:30, 11:00, 11:25, 11:52, 12:21, 12:34

    Sun
    8:02

    Mon
    12:04, 12:12, 13:38

It's a very consistent pattern with only occasional and very slight deviations - the timing of the connection may be off by 1min either way from week to week.

It's definitely the phone making the connections itself. (everyone in my home is sleeping Sun 8am anyway!).

Uhhhhh, no offense, but your "pattern" isn't very consistent. If it were to happen every 30min at the same times everyday, then maybe yes there's something weird going on.

I am very curious about your issue, so I fired up an R610 and will leave it on my desk for the weekend and see on Monday morning if the data usage counter has moved any.

Haha. Yes, I should have stressed that the pattern repeats every week. The same connections at the same times on Sat, Sun & Monday every week.

Ahhhh, OK, that makes more sense !

Alright, so here are my results:

Saturday at 11am: Data counter was at 232 KB
Monday at 6am: Data counter was at 271 KB

I can guarantee 100% that the phone has NOT been touched between Saturday and this morning. Now for the tougher part, figuring out WHY it's creating a data session on its own.

    @Abom

Thanks for taking the time to reproduce the problem - much appreciated!
