i have a sony ericsson w550i with tri band 900/1800/1900. when i turn it on it says emergency calls only. if i go outside it works a little better but not much. thank you.....would appreciate any help i can get

If you are having little to no signal on your W550i, then the predominant signal in your area is 850MHz. Nothing else you can do but to get a cell phone that supports 850MHz. Sell your W550i and get a W600i.

Check with AT&T - most places work on 1900Mhz - however some places require 850Mhz so you may have problems.
