Just come back from Spain where I was using my Virgin PAYG sim for GPRS.
If I connected to Vodafone ES, everything worked fine (despite using my
Virgin GPRS settings). Problem was that in one particular location, the
only decent signal was from Amena. My phone connected to Amena OK for voice,
but not GPRS, even with the username/password supplied by Amena of
CLIENTE/AMENA. It wouldn't work with my contract Vodafone simcard either.
Anyone manage to use GPRS with Amena and know what the settings should be?

According to the V Mobile website there is no roaming agreement with
Amena only Voda and Telefonica so not surprising you had no GPRS.

Check again - Amena is listed on this site. It just does not appear as a
hyperlink because the map defaults to show Amena coverage. Click on Vodafone
or Telefonica and the Amena entry appears as a hyperlink.
I know my phone showed Amena at times when I was last in Spain and I used
GPRS (I'm with Virgin pay monthly). I just can't remember if it was on Amena
when I used the GPRS. The Virgin bill does not show enough detail - it just
says "Accessing other sites".

Chris, you are correct. Amena obviously do have a roaming agreement with
Virgin - as I said in my original post, I could use voice on it and I also
said the same problem applied with my Voda card. Still puzzled as to why I
couldn't get use GPRS with either the Virgin or Voda sim.
So, if someone has **actually** used Amena gprs, please let me know what the
magic settings are.

I have under Orange. Just used my normal 'Orange Internet' settings.
The idea of roaming is that you don't need to change any settings.
It *could* have been a local problem I suppose. I found it to be a
flaky where I was but the signal was poor, so could have been that.
Movistar had a much stronger signal so I tended to use that.

Yes - I used Amena on my Virgin PAYG in April for GPRS. Didn't have to
change any settings.

Any chance you can tell me what your Virgin GPRS settings are?

Only things I can find are:
GPRS access point: goto.virginmobile.uk
Authentication Type: normal
User Name: user
Password: (blank)
Proxy: disabled
Hope that's some use

When you roam you use your home network's GPRS settings, not the roaming
partner's. You should never have to reconfigure the GPRS settings in your
phone just because you're roaming.

Glad to hear it. None of those worked on Amena, did on Vodafone ES. Hence my
trying Amena's settings.

Did you try connecting by GPRS through Amena just in that one place?
GPRS coverage is not 100% in Spain.
E.g. On the train between Barcelona and Vilanova there's a section which
always loses GPRS connection on Vodafone even though there's a good
signal. Not very long, but enough to be annoying.
You shouldn't need to change your GPRS settings when roaming by the way.
