Orange are the only provider who have a decent signal in the large building
where I work. This comes from guys who use the Orange "normal" (i.e. non-3G
    network).

Is the signal strength the same on 3G as it is on non-3G? Is it a completely
separate network therefore likely to be different?

    TIA.

It will be different for a number of reasons.

3G is provided by different infrastructure, but may well be on the same
site. If you are out of range of the 3G network it will just fallback to
    2G.

No. Some areas have no 3g coverage, others appear to show a stronger
signal that 2g. The main difference is that in 3g areas or mode,
you're likely to find some calls fail or go to voicemail for no
reason. Battery life is also much worse in 3g mode.

It's crazy, we're using V3x and Nokia phones and they're only reliable
with the 3g disabled. It's not even as if the sound quality's better
in 3g mode, sometimes it's worse! IMHO for anything other than data
don't bother with 3g unless you like the handset and are sure it can
    be disabled.

    The two do not correlate.

Your best be to be sure would be Orange's coverage checker, or by giving
    them a call.

I've just changed from Orange to Orange 3g and my reception both inside
my office and inside my house have both improved dramatically. Most
calls to the office never got through at all, and about half my calls at
    home dropped.

No guarantees you'll have the same result of course.

I should have added to that last sentence "whereas now I rarely drop a
    call in either location"

This is in E17 and WC2 by the way.
