13 months ago took out a 12 month contract via M2YD for a LG Prada on
    Vodafone.

Contract now passed 12 months, and wish to uinlock the SIm lock.

Asked VF - they say as they didn't issue the phone they can't do it,
so ask the provider or LG (bit if they did issue the code it would be
    free! [1])

Asked LG - they say they don;t provide unlock codes, and to ask the
    airtime provider.

Asked M2YD, they say they don't issue unlock codes and to ask the
    airtime provider.

So nobody can unlock the phone.

So - how the hell does one get a phone unlocked?

[1] I didn't think it wise to ask if they charge to NOT unlock it ;-)

Any local independent phone shop should be able to do it for no more

vodafone should give the code for free. Just ring again and don't
mention where the phone was bought. If they dont have the code
vodafone will request it from the manufacturer themselves and then
    pass it on to you.

Stupid question, i know, but have you actually checked to confirm its
sim locked ? I only ask as vodafone's claim of not issuing the phone
may mean it was from unlocked stock rather than vodafone locked (and
    supplied) stock.
