Well now I'm pissed. Just received my bill from Verizon to get this little
tidbit of news: Montgomery County Council has levied a $2.00 per line, per
month, Tax against Wireless Phone Service. I am a Senior Citizen on a
Grandfathered $14.95 a month Plan. $2.00 per line per month is a 13%
increase!! I have 2 phones one for me and the wife which equates to $4 per
month or $48 per year. No big deal? It is on a fixed income. So if you are
in Montgomery County Maryland, and have Wireless Service with ANY carrier,
you will be receiving this new Tax on your next bill.. Now I know how those
guys at the Boston Tea Party felt. (Where can I find a boat full of tea
    anyway? )

So heres your contact info to "state your feelings" to the Montgomery County
    Council.

Council Main EMAIL address: [email protected]
Main Council Phone Number : 240-777-7900.
Main Web Site for Council :
    http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/cs...ncil/index.asp

This is one "Little Guy Cant Beat City Hall " fight I'd like to see go all
    the way!!

Have you ever considered that you might be able to show a Delaware
address, (relatives, mail box etc) if verizon charges tax based ion
your mailing address, you might be able to beat the system--as someone
else, suggested, if you pay on line, after the address change (assuming
the above works) you could go to the web page and go "paperless billing"
advise what you think, or do, and result if you do.

If $4 is way too much for you, I recommend dropping your cell phones.

It's not the $, (although it probably is) it's the principal of
thing--the govt would (will) tax the air you breath, once they figure
    out how.

Check with an experienced lawyer on whether on not the County has the right to
    levy such a tax.

In response I knew there would be at least one Mr. Smart Ass that would
    state if $2 is
too much, cancel the phone service. Well, as much as I want too, I will
refrain from addressing the lack of intelligence that must abound at the
location that it came from. (But that just "give in" attitude has probably
    gotten him far in life.)
The many of our senior citizens of today have it very tough.
Not everyone retired with $300,000 in the bank and 2.5 million retirement
    fund.
The senior citizens in this country have problems that run deep, and
    finances are one of the
biggest. And when it comes to safety and security, seniors have a need for a
telecommunications devices as great if not greater then everyone else.
Second, I have an out of state address I can use, and may very well do that,
its just the point of Governmental Taxation burns your ass. When and where
does it stop? For those that are unaware, Montgomery County Maryland, used
to be the richest per capita county in the USA. Has dropped some over the
years, but it's up there. The amount of revenue this has created for the
Government is going to be astronomical. Too let them get away with this
without a fight, is setting a helluva precedent. Keep in mind, the
Governement administrators could care less, they have subsidized and/or
State funded wireless acounts, so what do they care.

20 years ago the poster might have been living in an adult child's home, or
vice-versa. Your "smart" remark is quite foolish. Many services progress from
luxury to necessity over time, as society itself changes.

What you haven't said in either post in this thread yet is what that
$2/phone tax is for. Is it to fund the cost for for E-911 for your county?

This was discussed in public hearings and the public was allowed to comment.
The post and the gazette both had articles about it so there is no excuse
for not knowing about it in advance. Did you go to the hearing to complain
before the tax was levied? Not many did. If you don't like how your local
government operates, you need to get involved. Commenting before the law is
made is much more effective then complaining after it is done.

My taxes on tmobile in montgomery county total 11.41. Only a quarter is
from the county. Go complain to Republican Bob Ehrlich about the state
sales tax and state 911 charges. I'm sure he'll be very receptive.

    Federal Excise Tax 2.53
    Federal Universal Service Fund 1.33
    State Sales Tax 4.65
    County 911 0.50
    County Utility Users Tax 2.00
    State 911 0.10

Oh, a cell phone is now a necessity, we better let the 50% of Americans
who don't have one know this so they can run out and get one. Food,
water, shelter are necessities a cell phone is not. MB

This is basically inflation. You're on a plan that's so cheap most
carriers don't even have one that low anymore. If your budget is so
fixed that the 4.00 increase is going to make you poor than you should
give up 1 of the lines or maybe both.
