I am new here and came here to find out how common this problem is. Two months ago, I switched to Cingular. My reception has been awful, dropped calls, calls that cut out, etc. I up graded phones and while at the store, the Cingular rep told me that there was some AT&T /Cingular merger equipment problems being addressed and it ought to be better by June. So I hung in there, and am now told I can't do anything about it because I am past my 30 days to try it. It is horrible - and several people I hear from tell me the same thing. How can a company enforce a contract that they don't live up to? Cingular has me over a barrel and doesn't care. I wish I could go back to Verizon.

I've had the same problems. I've been with Cingular forever, but it isn't until recently that I've had HORRIBLE service. I thought it was my Motorola V400 just acting up. I'm sorry to hear that someone else is experiencing the same problems I am. Good luck!

Unfortunately for you your only options are to either ride out the contract, and hope it will improve sooner rather than later, or pay the termination fee. You had 30 days to try out the service, and you chose to keep it despite your disatisfaction. What the Cingular rep told you has no bearing on your contract. Also take a look at the contract you signed, and read the fine print, it states on there that "Cingular does not guarantee coverage in all areas".

I'm not defending Cingular, because I actually feel bad for your situation, just letting you know what Cingular will tell you.

where do u guys live? i am in the bay area, CA and my reception is great. sorry to hear that you guys are having problems. Cingular claims that the service should be getting better because they are upgrading their equipment and doing that whole merging with AT&T thing. Hope ur service improves...

you may want to look into getting a new 64k sim card. It will allow better load balancing between blue and orange towers. If the new sim is set to prefer towers that give you a weaker signal, then you will need to call cs and ask for a ota push to change the prefered settings on your card.

unless of course if you have anabled manual network selection on your phone, then you can just do it yourself.

I am in Utah (the Salt Lake Valley, which encompasses different areas of reception. however, I had none of these problems with Verizon).- how do you know info about your SIM card? I wondered if either a better phone or something might help. I have a Motorola V-180. Does anyone know when this BS with the ATT/cingular tower thing will be resolved?

Rumor has it the tower conversions will be complete by early to mid 2006. Obviously some areas will be done well before that.

I have to wonder what networks your SIMs are preferring.

Im down here in provo and I had the same problems until I bought a different phone.

Your problem is that when cingular came over here to the west, they only had access to at&t's 800mhz gsm. So if you bought a phone in the first 8 months that they have been here, chances are that you have a phone that only supports 800/1100mhz. Now they have the new towers up and run on 800/1900mhz (not 1100mhz).. I got a new Razr and it NEVER has any reception problems where as my old sony ericsson t637 couldnt get reception in my room.

Belive it or not, if you go to the cingular store and complain about it, they will help you out. My old roomate's girlfriend had an older model nokia that wouldnt get reception anywhere. She called 611, talked to a rep and they sent her a new phone (even a nicer model). If that doesnt work, take it back to the place you bought it from and demand to trade it in for a different phone. Make sure this one supports both bands and your set

ADDED: I just looked and I was wrong, your phone runs on the 900/1800/1900 MHz GSM/GPRS frequencies meaning you are actually only running on the 1900MHz (same thing.. different number). When you go get a new phone, make sure the phone supports 800MHz AND 1900MHz

    Couldn't Agree More

I have been with Cingular for two miserable weeks. As you can tell by my login name! Got the new RAZR and all kinds of accessories. However it is like putting lipstick on a pig. You can dress it up with a nice shiny phone but it is as useful as a paperweight since you can not call anyone and they can not call you without getting an 'all circuits are busy' message or some kind of message involving a code that means nothing to any user. My only good fortune is that I am still under 30 days and will drop this service like a bad habit.

I was formerly with Sprint for many years and thought i wanted to switch to a GSM based phone. I thought Sprint sucked (even though signal quality was always good even in small town NH). I now live in Sarasota and get better reception putting a colander on my head and touching the tv than i do with Cingular.

Called in to cust service several times (they were courteous at least, probably because the know they don't have me by the short hairs for another 2 weeks) and got firmware upgrades had the phone re ported and reset. NO HELP. STILL SUCKS! Good luck to you. I am sure I'll be hearing from Scott on this. He must get paid $5 per post to spout his Cingular rhetoric up here.

Yeah- it has been the worst move I've ever made. You should see my rollover minutes accumulating. That's what happens when you can't use your phone. I do some part-time horse riding lessons and training on the side and had used this number for my contact for that. The bottom has dropped out of that for sure. I am hoping my BBB and FCC complaints get something happening. Otherwise, when I surpass the equipment fee stage, I will probably pay the early termination just to be rid of them. I will be sure to tell everyone I can how I have been treated.
