I'm looking for user experience with Cingular GSM only phones. I'm
curious how the GSM only is performing in rural areas. I have a GAIT
(tri-mode) phone and I am reluctant to give it up, but I want to go to
a GSM only PDA phone (Treo).
also I know that I can take the SIM and put it into a new GSM phone,
but i'm wondering if I activate a new GSM phone and take the new SIM,
put in into my GAIT phone, will I get the analog and TDMA coverage too
or will the new SIM only make the GAIT phone work in GSM mode?

The question cannot be answered as posed. Being rural does not
necessarily mean absence of GSM coverage any more than being urban
assures GSM coverage. It all depends upon where you are and who is
    providing service, rural or otherwise.

If you offer greater specificity than "rural areas," perhaps someone can
    offer helpful information.

Solution is, don't let Cingular activate the new SIM in the box with the
Treo. It's not a GAIT SIM--if you activate it (move your account and
phone number to it), and put it in the GAIT phone, it will operate in
GSM mode only (no TDMA or AMPS).

I find the Cingular GSM works as well as the TDMA did, around Memphis in
west Tennessee, north Mississippi, and eastern Arkansas.
